Triplets Born Over a Decade Apart

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

It’s not rare to hear of multiple births when discussing the subject of assisted reproductive techniques; however, it’s quite unusual for IVF triplets to be born 11 years apart from one another!  But that’s exactly what happened last month…

This past December, 2010, twin sisters from Britain received a wonderful holiday surprise – another female sibling to round out their family.  And best of all, this sibling was particularly special, as she was, in all essence, their biological “twin”, thus turning the girls into triplets.

All three were born using IVF whereby the embryos had been fertilized outside the womb and then medically implanted into the biological mother, Lisa Shepherd.

The Shepherds had originally given birth to their twins 11 years ago, but decided last year they wanted to use the remaining embryos (left from the original IVF treatment) to try to conceive one more time.  As it was a success, they now have three girls who are essentially “triplets” of differing ages.

Again, this is an unusual story, but a joyful one.  It also shows the viability of embryos that have been frozen for years and then used later for IVF.  As reproductive science research advances farther, there’s little doubt that even more amazing “in the news” IVF stories will appear.

IVF Treatment and the “Lucky 13″ Couple

Friday, June 11th, 2010

There’s a huge buzz going on right now about the couple from Britain who underwent fertility treatments (specifically IVF) 13 times over 7 years in order to get pregnant with their twins.  (The girls are very healthy at two month old.)

While we’re thrilled that the man and woman had a positive outcome, we do feel that it’s important for readers to understand that this represents an unusual story in the world of fertility treatments for a number of reasons:

1.  Most couples don’t continue to do IVF this many times.  Nor should couples intending to consider IVF worry that they’ll have to go through round after round.  Usually, if IVF doesn’t work a few times, patients will choose other routes.

2.  Not all fertility treatments are extremely costly.  The article highlights how much the couple spent over time, but their experience is an individual one.

3.  Going abroad for fertility treatments is a last resort.  Perhaps in western Europe it’s more common to head to other parts of Europe to undergo IVF, but Americans are usually cautioned against going this drastic route, especially when there are exceptional fertility specialists around the states.

Again, we’re very happy for this couple and glad they feel so overjoyed at reaching their dream of becoming parents.  For them, 13 indeed has been tremendously lucky!

  • Could Adult Bedroom “Toys” Contribute to Infertility?

    Saturday, December 19th, 2009

In a rather unusual story from Canada, two sisters who are involved in a field that involves adult sex toys are concerned that chemicals that have been banned (at least in Canada) from other items are allowed in adult bedroom products.

Two of the chemicals in question are bisphenol A and phthalates, which some claim are linked to medical concerns including infertility.  Other chemicals (many of which are commonly found in sexual lubricants) have also been deemed potentially dangerous by some scientists.

Though this shouldn’t be cause for extreme measures, couples who use bedroom devices to enhance their romantic activities may wish to consider the materials from which those items are manufactured.
