Is There Really a “Cure” for Infertility?

Monday, May 9th, 2011

“New cure for infertility!”

“Cure your infertility once and for all!”

“New secrets to curing infertility revealed!”

In the reproductive health science industry, we hear it all – the claims of cures, the offers of “secret tricks”, the tell-all missives from “gurus”.  But the truth of the matter is that there is no single “cure” for infertility.

Now, before you become upset or unhappy, please know that there are ways to overcome infertility in many cases.  At RSI, one of the Philadelphia area’s most reputable fertility clinics, we perform “miracles” every day.  But there is not one cure-all for all types of infertility.

That’s one of the reasons it pays to be very cautious – and scientific – when it comes to your reproductive health.  If you’ve been having trouble conceiving, you need to see a specialist, not just read a book or buy a tonic or vitamin.  Every case is 100% unique; thus, the way to work around different forms of infertility varies accordingly.

P.T. Barnum said that there was someone willing to give up his money born every minute… and P.T. Barnum took advantage of that willingness.  Others will try to operate similarly and separate you from your finances in an effort to sell you a “cure” that simply doesn’t exist.

It would be amazing if there really were a one-stop-shopping method to treating infertility.  However, there is not.  But there ARE answers… and there IS hope!  Come to RSI for a consultation and find out what your options are before falling prey to snake oil.

Secondary Infertility – Why Is It So Tough on Families?

Monday, April 18th, 2011

For couples who are without any children and who are trying to become pregnant, it can be difficult to understand why partners facing secondary infertility* are so upset.

(*Secondary infertility is, quite simply, infertility after having successfully conceived a child or children.)

The truth of the matter is that whether or not you have a household full of children or you’ve been relegated to caring for furry, four-legged “kids”, infertility can still be emotionally difficult.

If you’ve been having issues getting pregnant even though you’ve been pregnant before, it’s time to see a reproductive health specialist to talk about secondary infertility.  Stop listening to the negative people who say you’re “selfish” to want more children; if having a larger family is your goal, it’s reasonable to find out why you’re not conceiving naturally.

As for the reasons behind secondary infertility, there are numerous possibilities to explain the problem.  Some, like ovulation issues, are relatively easy to address.  Others, like the case of a woman who has entered into menopause earlier than expected, may require medical action.

Regardless, it’s important to recognize that secondary infertility is a condition that a) can be addressed and b) shouldn’t be ignored if the couple truly wants more kids.

Guiliana Rancic Says Weight Doesn’t Affect Infertility… But She’s Only Partially Correct

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Star Guiliana Rancic isn’t mincing words when she tells the media that her thin frame has nothing to do with her inability to conceive a child.  And she does make some excellent points, the main being that there are plenty of women her size (both on TV, in print, in movies, etc.) and smaller who wind up having a baby after successful rounds of IVF.  However, the truth of the matter is that weight MAY affect infertility; it just depends upon the situation.

It would be great if weight could be “blamed” for infertility, but it simply isn’t the only aspect affecting fertility issues.  Infertility is a complex, personal matter, which is why it’s important to get help from a fertility specialist as early as possible.  Each person’s body – male or female – reacts uniquely, so each infertility treatment has to be customized as much as possible.  For some individuals, weight will be a large factor; for others, it will have less impact.

Not being Rancic’s physicians, we cannot say for sure why her IVF treatment hasn’t helped her achieve a pregnancy that ended in a child.  (Early last year, she had a miscarriage.)  And, truth be told, she was asked to gain some pounds to prepare her body, which does somewhat weaken her message.  Still, she’s entitled to her own opinion and we’re certain she’s discussed the matter with her fertility specialist.

We hope that Rancic’s 2011 includes an addition to her family, whether through IVF or other fertility treatment options.

The Myth of the Perpetually Fertile Male

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

“Of course HE can become a dad at any age!  But for a woman, it’s different!”

How many times have we heard that phrase repeated by people who are discussing the whole parenting issue of males versus females?  But it perpetuates a myth that male fertility is something that doesn’t change over time and isn’t a concern.

The truth of the matter is that between 30-40% of all fertility problems in couples is due to male infertility, not female infertility.  It’s a fact that surprises a lot of men… and women.

The next time you hear someone talking about the notion that men are somehow immune to fertility issues, you might want to interject the aforementioned statistic.  Hopefully, that will help educate people into realizing that fertility isn’t a one-gender concern.
