5 Signs of Potential Fertility Issues

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Unless you’ve struggled to have a child naturally, it can be tough to understand why couples don’t “automatically” realize they are having a fertility issue.  The truth is, though, that many people simply don’t always recognize infertility.

Below, we’ve put together 5 common signs that you or your partner is having or is at risk of having fertility issues.  Remember that these aren’t all-inclusive; you may have other symptoms and should always ask your physician if you have any concerns about your reproductive health

1.  The Woman Doesn’t Menstruate

A lack of menstruation usually means little to no ovulation.  Thus, there is no egg to be fertilized.

2.  The Man Cannot Ejaculate

Though there has been some research indicating that pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain a small amount of semen, it’s unlikely that a woman will get pregnant if her partner cannot fully ejaculate.

3.  No Conception within a Year of Trying

If partners have been having sex 2-3 times per week (especially during ovulation) and there has been no conception, there may be a fertility issue.

4.  The Female Partner is Extremely Overweight or Underweight

Conception is made more difficult if one of the partners has a weight problem.  Excessively overweight woman and excessively underweight women often have reproductive health issues as a result.

5.  A History of STDs or Cancer

People who have had STDs or cancer are at higher risk for fertility issues.

Again, you should consult with your own doctor to learn more about the factors that may affect your ability to conceive on your own.

Using Diet to Improve Fertility Treatment Results

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

If you’re experiencing infertility, you’re likely to get a lot of advice.  And sooner or later the topic is going to turn to diet.  But can what you eat really improve the chances of your fertility treatments working?

All signs point to “yes” as the answer to that question.

Consider these points:

  • If you currently follow a diet that’s deficient in certain vitamins and you make a point of incorporating those missing elements into your food plan, you’ll be naturally healthier.  Therefore, you’ll be straining your body less from an internal perspective.
  • If you are seriously overweight or obese, starting a structured eating plan can indeed improve your fertility treatment results, mainly because your weight will be in a healthy range for your height, age, etc.  As long as you don’t go on a “crash diet” or start losing too much weight, you’ll have a better chance with whatever fertility treatments you try.
  • A lot of people — men and women — who struggle with infertility experience mood swings.  A healthier diet can assist in alleviating or minimizing the “ups and downs”.

Again, there’s no way to tell if an alteration in what you eat will mean a child; however, it’s unlikely to hurt and can only make you feel and look healthier than ever.  And that’s not such a bad thing!

  • Study Suggests Women Aren’t Waiting to Get Fertility Treatments

    Friday, December 18th, 2009

Rumor would have us believing that women are putting off their fertility treatments until the latest possible time in their lives, but that seems to be a myth.  A recent survey of over 700 women showed that 88% were under age 35 when they first sought treatment for their fertility issues.

This shows that many women (and men) are recognizing the signs that they might need help (e.g., not conceiving naturally after trying for about a year to get pregnant, a series of ectopic pregnancies, endometriosis, STDs).  It’s a good development, as it gives individuals and families more time to work with reproductive science specialists to address their fertility issues.
