Secondary infertility isn’t something that most people used to talk about; after all, if you’ve been able to conceive once, shouldn’t you be able to do so again? The answer, of course, is “no”. Fortunately, the media is finally shedding light on this subject that causes so many couples pain and confusion.
Foremost, it’s important to understand that there can be a number of reasons for secondary infertility, such as:
1) If a woman who has conceived in the past is now trying to conceive with a different partner, he may have undiagnosed fertility issues.
2) If a woman conceived several years ago, she may now be at a point in her life when it’s difficult for her body to have a baby naturally.
3) If a man or woman has experienced health issues (e.g., cancer treatments, serious weight loss/gain), he or she may have compromised fertility.
So what can be done about secondary infertility?
First, it’s important to acknowledge it. If conception hasn’t occurred in 6-12 months of trying, going to a fertility specialist could be the best possible move.
Secondly, it’s critical to understand that it’s not anyone’s “fault”. It simply is a medical fact that you’re having trouble conceiving.
Finally, it’s not a sign that you’ll never have children. In fact, here at RSI we’ve been able to help couples dealing with secondary infertility have more babies.

If you’re a woman who is either seriously overweight OR underweight, you may want to get your diet in check before moving forward with fertility treatments.
Weight plays a definite factor in how well a woman’s body will respond to all types of fertility treatments, from Clomid to IVF. So it’s important to prepare if you predict that fertility treatments will be in your future.
How can you make sure your weight is in line? BMI is often used by physicians as a measure of how appropriate your weight is based on your height. While it’s not always perfect (if you have a lot of muscle mass or are unusually short or tall, the results can be skewed), it’s a good starting point.
Another measure can be just how you look and feel. Most people in the obese and underweight categories are aware that their bodies are out of proportion from where they should be. In this case, a diet and exercise regimen may be warranted.
As with all lifestyle change programs, it’s a good idea to talk with your family doctor first. Explain to him or her that you’re going to be considering fertility treatments and that you want your weight to be in your favor, not against you. Then, you can proceed as he or she suggests.

As we’ve discussed with other celebs, many are choosing to go public with their infertility journeys. And Katie Price is no exception.
Price is a British model/actress/singer and although she might not be as well-known to people in the U.S. as she is in the U.K., she’s gaining popularity… not to mention headlines.
Unlike the “typical” Hollywood IVF story, Price is still young — in her early thirties. As more information comes forward, it will be interesting to hear which fertility treatments she chooses.

“Can single individuals get fertility treatments?”
It’s a question that’s often asked, and the answer is “yes”. Of course, that doesn’t mean that those women (and sometimes men) don’t have unique considerations.
For instance, singles should consider:
- Which fertility treatments are best suited to their particular situations.
- Whether they have a strong support system in place.
- How they will get to and from appointments, especially if they need assistance driving after a particular treatment.
In today’s society, there is no reason for someone to forgo the idea of becoming a mommy or daddy simply because he or she has not found the ideal partner. Many reproductive health specialists, RSI included, welcome single persons and wish to help them on their journeys.

For many individuals and couples going through infertility issues and the stressors often associated with fertility treatments, the answer is clear — join a support group. Whether it’s online or in person, this kind of community often becomes a “safe haven” of sorts for men and women dealing with infertility matters.
However, that doesn’t mean that a support group — OR that every support group — is going to fit the bill for you. If you’re not sure if you want to join a group, ask yourself these questions:
- Do you feel comfortable talking about your (or a partner’s) infertility matters or — even if you don’t discuss your own personal issues — hearing about others’ fertility concerns? If the answer is “no”, a support group might be extremely uncomfortable for you. However, you may find one-on-one therapy to be valuable.
- Are you willing to devote time to a support group? Maybe a support group sounds great theoretically, but you honestly know that you’ll spend a fraction of the time you should on attending meetings, whether in person or virtually. Though that isn’t a definite reason not to join, it may hinder your experiences as a support group member.
- Are you willing to allow yourself to be open to a group setting? Some people simply do not wish to be around those they do not know while discussing their personal issues. Of course, if you can bring a trusted friend or family member with you to your group, you may be able to alleviate some of those worries.
Remember that regardless of whether or not you’re currently ready for an infertility support group, you can always change your mind in the future. After all, it’s your experience to share… or not.

The phrase “420 friendly” is often used to denote people and websites that are open to the casual use of marijuana (cannabis). However, for those couples trying to conceive, it’s a good idea to halt any drug use, including that of marijuana.
Many studies have made a connection between marijuana use and subsequent male and female infertility issues. Although some pro-marijuana groups feel that the evidence should be challenged, the medical community generally feels that results of studies are strong enough to support the notion that anyone who wants to have a child should halt all use of marijuana.

Think fertility issues are only a North American concern? Guess again.
Throughout the world, more and more men and women are becoming interested in the subject of infertility; they are also becoming more apt to seek out assistance to help overcome their fertility issues.
In a recent article, “Global Rates of Reproduction Climb”, the author notes that:
“…in the two year period since the previous report was published, the number of people who sought ART treatment globally increased by 25 percent, while the number of babies born as a result of ART procedures rose from 219,000 in 2000 to 246,000 in 2002.”
The article goes on to explain that the number of live births corresponds with the expected increase in multiples, a reality for many recipients of in vitro fertilization methods.
