“Do I look fat in this?”
It’s a common phrase, especially in western culture where extra pounds are seen as verboten! There’s no doubt about it – many women complain about the weight, but what plenty with infertility issues don’t ever consider is the size of their ovaries.
However, researchers have shown that ovaries can be “fat”, or, more to the point, “fatty”. And the heavier/larger the ovaries are, the harder it can be for females to conceive without intervention from a fertility specialist.
Fatty ovaries have a tendency to be found in women who are already obese or in those who have diabetes. Because of the additional fatty acids contained within the ovaries, conception is made problematic. Essentially, fertilization cannot occur because fat is being metabolized at a faster-than-normal rate.
A recent study looked at this phenomenon by testing the ovaries of cows. Though not all animal research translates to humans, the British scientists who headed this one have emphasized their certainty that findings are pertinent for humans as well as bovines.
So is a “fat” ovary a definite cause of your infertility? Without a comprehensive checkup from a reputable fertility specialist, like those found at the Reproductive Science Institute of Suburban Philadelphia, PC (RSI), it is really impossible to say. Yet it is wise to lose weight if your BMI is greater than 25 or lands you into a “clinically obese” category, regardless of whether your ovaries are contributing to your infertility issues or not.

“You’re getting fertility treatments? Oh my gosh! Are you ready to have triplets… or more?!? How on earth will you deal with that???”
It’s one of those innocent statements that often rolls off the tongues of friends and loved ones, but it’s only indicative of one fact – that the media has done a poor job of educating the public on what fertility treatments really entail.
First and foremost, it’s important to realize that just because you’re going to a fertility specialist does not necessarily mean you’ll have multiples. In fact, a very small percentage of people who go to reputable clinics like the Philadelphia area’s RSI for assisted reproductive techniques (ART) eventually have twins, triplets or more.
Secondly, not all fertility treatments have any (or much) bearing on multiple births. Sure, IVF is spoken about repeatedly on the Internet, television and radio. And IVF’s multiples rate is higher than for “normal” pregnancies (often said to be about 10x the normal rate.) But it isn’t the only fertility treatment on the market. Other fertility treatments, such as taking Clomid or similar drugs to essentially “jumpstart” ovulation, have a much lower rate of multiples (as low as 5% depending upon which medical journal/study you cite.)
In the end, it’s important to educate yourself (and your partner) and not make assumptions. You’ll no doubt hear the “multiples” comments several times over the course of your fertility treatment journey, but take heart in knowing that just because you consider ART, you aren’t guaranteeing you’ll need two or more cribs!

If you’ve ever watched Trading Spaces, the phenomenal program that aired on TLC several years ago, you were no doubt mesmerized by the abilities of Vern Yip. And now he’s about to become a daddy… for the second time!
Yip and his partner worked with a surrogate to allow them to become parents again. And (through their media reps) it appears that they couldn’t be happier!
Of course, you don’t have to be a Hollywood star or a household name to consider surrogacy; in fact, it’s becoming more and more acceptable in America as the facts (rather than myths) of fertility issues begin to filter into the mainstream.
If you’re considering surrogacy or would just like to know more about the process, feel free to visit RSI at our Philadelphia area office. We’ll be happy to give you a consultation and help you determine if working with a surrogate is the best solution for you (and/or your partner.)
And, as we always say when we mention a “happy ending” for any person… we wish Yip and his family all the joys that parenthood can bring!

In California, fertility specialists are trying out a new method of checking embryos’ development and potential in order to increase the odds of long-term success via IVF treatment.
Using specialized time-lapse photography, the fertility specialists were able to examine the rate of cell divisions in embryos. Using the photos, they could determine which embryos would survive for six days with an impressive success rate of 90%.
The California fertility specialists‘ findings were reported in the journal Nature Biotechnology and will no doubt be a source of many new developments over the coming months and years. (As an aside, the study examined the development of 242 embryos, an acceptable number from which to gather information.)
Though this technique of gauging IVF treatment success is still in its “infancy”, it holds promising possibilities, as it may have the potential to double the odds of conceiving for infertile individuals and couples. It also holds the key to limiting the number of multiple births because the strongest embryos can be chosen before implantation.

Since the first “test tube baby” (a child named Louise Brown) was born in England in 1978, more than 3 million children have come into the world thanks to fertility treatments… and more are likely to become part of our society as reproductive health science procedures become even more refined.
There’s little doubt that fertility treatments have radically changed the way women and men feel about themselves, their relationships and their lives. Whereas before there was little hope for someone who couldn’t conceive, now there is a decent chance that, if nothing else, an answer can be found to his, her or their issue.
This type of paradigm shift in the way we think about conception and birth is powerful. It’s also stressful on some levels, as the decision to embark upon fertility treatments is a very personal journey that takes a lot of soul-searching.
Fortunately, the next generation (and the generation after that and so on) will likely experience less of the stigma of seeking fertility treatments than do some modern individuals and couples. As more education and information becomes available, the realities and understanding of procedures like IVF and egg donation will no doubt become less mysterious and more commonplace.
In the meantime, we feel privileged to be a part of the industry that’s brought happiness to so many people throughout the world for the past 30+ years.

It’s a terrific use of technology — iPhone users can now monitor their fertility treatments.
Though not being used widely right now, Australian scientists plan to have couples (and/or patients) monitor their IVF treatmentsusing their iPhones and/or Blackberries. This will enable the Australian fertility specialists to help the patients make sure they are keeping up with their injections, scans, blood tests, etc.
The original trial of this program was tried by 17 persons undergoing fertility treatments and was met with positive feedback.
No doubt it will soon be used in the United States as well, though likely on a somewhat limited basis at first.
It gives even more credence to the notion that “there’s an app for that”!
