Celebrities and Assisted Reproductive Techniques

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Celine Dion.  Giuliana Rancic.  Neil Patrick Harris.  They’ve made headlines the past year as they’ve openly discussed their experiences with assisted reproductive techniques (ART).

In Dion’s case, her fertility treatments may have been long and uncomfortable, but she recently gave birth to twins and is reported to be happier than ever.

For Rancic, fertility treatments haven’t provided her with a child yet, but she and her husband are hopeful that they can still conceive.

Harris and his male partner opted for surrogacy to fulfill their dreams of becoming dads.

Thanks to the openness shared by celebrities like Dion, Rancic and Harris (through their publicity managers, of course), men and women have a better understanding of what IVF, IUI, egg donation and surrogacy are all about.

Though no one who hasn’t been through the experience of infertility can truly appreciate the challenge of the journey, having Hollywood’s elite tell their stories does provide a much-needed opening for discussions about ART.

Our question to you is this:

Does reading about stars’ difficulties with their fertility help you in any way?

It’s Twins via Surrogate for Neil Patrick Harris and Partner

Friday, October 15th, 2010

It’s official.  Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, David Burtka, are now the proud parents of twins — a boy and a girl.

Like many gay couples, the men had to choose a non-traditional route to have a child together.  Preferring to use at least one of the couple’s DNA, Harris and Burtka chose the route of surrogacy.

Surrogacy is a process used by both heterosexual and homosexual partners and individuals in order to have a child.  A surrogate mother carries the child to term and then the baby is given to the parents.

If you’re contemplating going the surrogacy route, it’s critical to choose a clinic that has a great deal of experience in the process.  There are plenty of elements to the experience that would be difficult — if not practically impossible — to handle on one’s own.  And that begins with finding the right surrogate.

Our congratulations go out to Harris and Burtka and all the other moms and dads who have become parents through surrogacy.

    Friday, August 20th, 2010

Neil Patrick Harris, star of the 1990′s “Doogie Houser, M.D.”, will soon be bouncing twins on his knee.

Harris (who officially identified himself as a homosexual several years ago) and his partner, David Burtka, chose to use a surrogate over adopting a child.  The surrogate’s identity has not been revealed (which is typical during the surrogacy process), but Harris has confirmed that the twins are due this autumn.

We wish Harris and Burtka much joy as their family doubles!
