Another Reason to Stop Smoking If You’re Trying to Get Pregnant…

Friday, October 1st, 2010

If you’re trying to get pregnant and undergoing fertility treatments, here’s another reason to stop smoking — a new study has found a link suggesting that pregnant women who smoke may be affecting the fertility of their babies, especially male children.

The German study, published in an early September edition of “Human Reproduction” (a medical journal), used 37-68 day old embryos to evaluate the development of the testes.  The study found a significant correlation between mothers who smoked and a reduction in the normal number of reproductive cells and somatic cells in their offspring.

Although more evidence needs to be collected regarding this matter, it’s important that all women who are trying to conceive stop smoking.  Not only is it better for a child’s health and development, but it’s also better for the mommy.

  • American “Test Tube” Baby Becomes Mom

    Friday, August 6th, 2010

Way back when, the term “fertility treatment” wasn’t in vogue.

Instead, children born via assisted reproductive technologies were often referred to in the media (and conversation) as “test tube babies.”  Fast forward 30 years and infertility has become a household word (though a still misunderstood concept on many fronts, something this blog is dedicated to remedying through information.)

This past week, a momentous occurrence took place when the first American “test tube” baby, Elizabeth Carr (b. 1981), became  a mom on Thursday, August 5.

Though Carr did not use any kind of fertility treatments to conceive (always the first question she seems to be asked!), her coming “full circle” emphasizes that reproductive health has grown to be mainstream in only a generation or two.  Not only is this exciting from a social perspective, but it’s fascinating from a medical one as well.

We wish Carr the best as she begins her life as a mommy… and we thank her for continuing to share her world with everyone.

  • The Number of “Over 40″ Moms is on the Rise!

    Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Is 40 really the new 30 when it comes to starting a family?  The CDC reports that it just might be, as there has been a marked increase in females who are 40+ having children.

Though some women in this age range are conceiving naturally (about 10%, according to the CDC), a large percentage are opting for fertility treatments such as IVF, IUI and egg donations to make their mommy dreams a reality.

It’s exciting to be able to see the results of advanced reproductive treatment options.  Here’s to all those great older moms and dads!

  • Fertility Treatment Considerations for Single People

    Friday, April 2nd, 2010

“Can single individuals get fertility treatments?”

It’s a question that’s often asked, and the answer is “yes”.  Of course, that doesn’t mean that those women (and sometimes men) don’t have unique considerations.

    For instance, singles should consider:

    • Which fertility treatments are best suited to their particular situations.
    • Whether they have a strong support system in place.
    • How they will get to and from appointments, especially if they need assistance driving after a particular treatment.

In today’s society, there is no reason for someone to forgo the idea of becoming a mommy or daddy simply because he or she has not found the ideal partner.  Many reproductive health specialists, RSI included, welcome single persons and wish to help them on their journeys.
