TLC’s ‘The Little Couple’ suffer miscarriage setback in their surrogacy journey

Monday, November 14th, 2011

If you’ve ever seen TLC’s “The Little Couple, you know stars Bill Klein and Jen Arnold have been working with a surrogate to help them have a baby. In the season finale this spring, the couple found out the surrogate was pregnant.

Well last week the couple received bad news — the surrogate has had a miscarriage. It is a devastating turn of events for the couple, as they were using a surrogate to increase their chances for a healthy baby. Because of Arnold’s health issues, carrying a pregnancy is a serious health risk; in fact it could even threaten her life. Also, the use of IVF technology can help them avoid passing on the genetic cause of their skeletal dysplasia, a disease that can be deadly for their baby. Using pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, doctors are able to identify which embryos carry the genetic disease. Then, they can transfer healthy embryos to the surrogate’s uterus.

Time will tell if the couple opts to try again with their current fertility plan of using IVF technology and a surrogate. We certainly wish them well, and view them as an inspiration and an example of just what is possible with technological advancements in fertility treatments and surrogacy.

Multiple Miscarriages Correlated with Later Heart Disease

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Tomorrow, February 4th, is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for heart disease. I know what you’re thinking, “this is a blog about fertility issues, why are we talking about heart disease?” The reason is because a recent large study found strong correlations showing that women who suffered recurrent pregnancy loss were at a very high risk for disease later on in life. Those women who had experienced a stillbirth or multiple miscarriages had increased risk of heart attack, with those experiencing three miscarriages or more raising their risk for heart attack nine times!

For many women in the study, traits such as being overweight, being less physically active and having diabetes were contributing factors. Additionally, women who smoked or consumed a high amount of alcohol were put at higher risk than otherwise healthy women who had also experienced recurrent pregnancy loss.

Keeping these things in mind, if you are a woman who has suffered multiple miscarriages or stillbirths or a combination of these types of pregnancy loss, please be mindful of your risk. Talk to your doctor and make sure that you are living a lifestyle that will prevent heart disease.

Furthermore, if you have suffered recurrent pregnancy loss and have not sought the help and advice of a fertility specialist, please contact us! We welcome every new client with open arms and we offer many options for couples who have suffered infertility. Please let us help you find the one that will be the best fit.

Celine Dion Vows to Keep Trying IVF Despite Recent Miscarriage

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

It’s no secret that megastar Celine Dion has gone through IVF treatments in the past. In fact, she’s been quite vocal about her experiences. But for Dion, as happens for many women, a latest round of IVF treatments have ended in a miscarriage. To Dion’s credit, however, she’s not going to give up hope. Though she’s headed back to Las Vegas for more entertaining, she still has thoughts of conceiving a baby on her mind.

As Dion noted in a recent interview, she’s going to keep attempting IVF “until it works”.

We wish her much luck and applaud her for her positive attitude and willingness to discuss this personal situation.

  • Celiac Disease and Infertility

    Thursday, December 24th, 2009

If you’ve been diagnosed with celiac disease (or if you have the disease and don’t realize it), you could be facing fertility problems.

Celiac disease is a disease of the digestive tract.  Those who have it typically experience bouts of gastrointestinal distress, including bloating, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.  It’s estimated that there are over 2 million persons thought to have celiac disease in the U.S.; those who have been diagnosed must opt for a gluten-free diet to combat their problems.

Two of the more intriguing (and sometimes overlooked) symptoms of celiac disease which may be overlooked are infertilityand frequent miscarriage.  Although it’s true that those symptoms can be associated with a wide range of medical concerns, it’s advisable to get checked for celiac disease if you’re having trouble conceiving and cannot pinpoint the reason.  If nothing else, you’ll rule out a potential source of infertility.
