September has officially been named PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) awareness month, and as we’ve mentioned here before, PCOS can be a huge factor for women trying to conceive.
In a nutshell, PCOS negatively affects ovulation, causing it to occur very infrequently or not at all. Consequently, women who have PCOS may experience infertility… even if they’ve already had prior children without resorting to fertility treatments. (This type of PCOS-driven secondary fertility isn’t uncommon, though it often surprises couples.)
Fortunately, PCOScan be detected and there are numerous medications available to help women “jump start” their ovulation. Though they certainly don’t work for everyone, they are worth trying if the opportunity to conceive a child without other fertility treatments is desired.

As we’ve written about before at our blog, chlamydia can be one of the contributors to infertility or fertility issues. A very common STD with nasty long-term side effects, chlamydia is difficult to pinpoint unless men or women get tested.
This is why the Swedish have announced “Chlamydia Mondays”, a new PR program that’s a bit “out there” (it features outlandish cartoons to get the point across) but which the government hopes will resonate with the 4-per-hour-adults who are contracting chlamydia in the country.
So how do you know if you have chlamydia? Many people have no clue they’re carrying the disease, as it masks itself well. So if you’ve been having trouble getting pregnant and your physician has ruled out other possibilities but hasn’t tested you or your partner for chlamydia, it’s worth a look.
If nothing else, you’ll know if you are putting your partner at risk and you’ll also be able to get healthier.

If you’re a male and you and your partner are having trouble conceiving a child naturally, the blame may lay with one of your habits — smoking.
As a recent WebMD article notes:
What appears to be happening is that smoking-damaged sperm lose much of their ability to fight off destructive oxygen molecules — free radicals — in the seminal fluid. Interestingly, in addition to making spermcells more sensitive to oxidative stress, smoking itself increases the concentration of free radicals in the seminal fluid.
The upshot of this finding is that the damage to sperm appears to be temporary. This means if a male quits smoking, within several months he can, for all intents and purposes, reverse the fertility issues caused by smoking.

For many couples, the question isn’t whether to start fertility treatments. It’s when to stop. And that can be a very difficulty decision to make.
Stopping fertility treatments means going back to trying to conceive naturally or simply not trying to conceive at all. It’s a choice fraught with emotion and uncertainty.
If you’re not sure whether it’s time to consider ending your fertility treatments, consider doing the following:
- Talk with your fertility specialist about your concerns. This will help alleviate any fears and enable you to get answers. Your fertility specialist should have a good understanding of your personal situation and will be in a position to help you “talk it out”.
- Stop thinking of ceasing fertility treatments as “losing”. This isn’t a game. It isn’t a win-lose proposition. Having a child carries with it a lot of factors, many of which you cannot control. Accept that as fact.
- Try to determine a “stopping point” date. Giving a deadline will assist you in making the decision to stop fertility treatments by taking much of the anxiety out of the choice.
Again, this isn’t simple… but it may be something you have to consider. So if you’re approaching that point, you need to plan ahead as much as you can.

It may seem shocking to some people, but there are plenty of surrogacy “scams” on the web. These are perpetrated by con artists who prey on the desire of individuals and couples to have a child of their own.
But it’s easy to see why so many people turn to the Internet when they begin to seriously consider surrogacy; after all, we turn to the Internet for practically everything in this day and age. But it’s critical that if you’re seeking a surrogate, you not fall for the scammers.
As fertility specialists, we’re very, very cautious when it comes to surrogacy. We select our surrogates as you would want us to — with the welfare of the child above all else. Our surrogate candidates are thoroughly vetted using guidelines in accordance with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. And if couples or individuals bring potential surrogates to us, we still go through a very rigorous process to make sure everyone involved is ready for this step.
By all means do your information-gathering with your computer. But if it comes time to seriously discuss surrogacy, please do so with a fertility specialist. It’s the safest route to take.

How do you know if a fertility specialist is right for you? It’s a good question to ask, especially given the fact that you’ll be discussing intimate lifestyle details with him or her on a regular basis.
Though the following list is not all-inclusive, it will give you a good starting point for determining if the fertility specialist you’re considering is the perfect one for your needs:
1. Does the Fertility Specialist Show You Respect?
Your experiences with your fertility specialist should be positive, and that starts with him or her showing you respect.
2. Do You Like the Fertility Specialist’s Office?
Does the office space seem clean to you? Do you feel comfortable there?
3. Does Your Fertility Specialist Make You Wait Inordinate Amounts of Time?
Though it’s not unusual for all physicians, including fertility specialists, to run behind from time to time, if you feel you’re constantly waiting… and waiting… and waiting… you may not be getting the service you deserve.
4. Does Your Fertility Specialist Take Your Questions Seriously? Does He/She Answer Them Promptly?
Have you ever had the experience of asking your fertility specialista question and receiving a rude or non-existent response? If so, you may want to consider switching to a reproductive health science professional who will treat your concerns seriously.
5. Does Your Partner Like the Fertility Specialist?
If you love your fertility specialist but your partner doesn’t, it may cause difficulty down the road. While this isn’t a definitely “deal breaker”, it’s absolutely something you need to consider.

If you’re trying to conceive a child and you’ve had difficulty in getting pregnant, you might actually be having sex too much. Though it seems counter-intuitive, having intercourse too frequently can lower the chances of natural conception occurring.
Why is the frequency such an issue? It all has to do with the man’s sperm count.
If a male is ejaculating on a daily basis, the viability of his sperm (as well as the amount of semen) may be reduced to a point where conception becomes more and more difficult. Thus, even if a woman is ovulating as expected, pregnancy has a lowered chance of occurring.
Obviously, the best way to find out “how much is too much” is to speak with your fertility specialist. He or she will help you come up with a plan that maximizes your opportunities to conceive.

There’s nothing innately funny about fertility problems, but that doesn’t mean that keeping a sense of humor isn’t critical to getting through them. In fact, it’s mentally and physically very healthy to be able to laugh on a regular basis.
Interestingly, the basic physiological changes that occur when a person laughs may have a significant impact on his or her being able to increase the chances that a fertility procedure works.
For instance, because humor reduces stress, a woman may be more relaxed when undergoing IVF. Her body may hold itself less rigidly, meaning that the fertility procedure takes place more efficiently with less pain. And who knows? A relaxed body could be more conducive to a better result.
The same holds true for men. If a male has been told that he *must* perform sexually on certain days of the week or month to maximize the chances of fertility occurring, that’s a huge stressor. Being able to find the humor in the situation keeps the mood in the bedroom from turning sour. It also keeps him from being unable to get “in the mood” or even ejaculate.
With this being said, fertility problems absolutely aren’t a walk in the park. They aren’t fun. They aren’t light-hearted in and of themselves. But being able to put them into perspective may just be what the doctor ordered.

Neil Patrick Harris, star of the 1990′s “Doogie Houser, M.D.”, will soon be bouncing twins on his knee.
Harris (who officially identified himself as a homosexual several years ago) and his partner, David Burtka, chose to use a surrogate over adopting a child. The surrogate’s identity has not been revealed (which is typical during the surrogacy process), but Harris has confirmed that the twins are due this autumn.
We wish Harris and Burtka much joy as their family doubles!
If you’re interested in learning more about surrogacy as an option OR if you wish to become a surrogate to a family struggling with fertility issues, contact the fertility specialists at RSI.

If you’re one of the millions of women who suffer from vaginal dryness during intercourse and have been plagued by fertility issues, it may be time to consider the type of lubricant you’re using. Many are simply not “sperm friendly“.
So how can you be certain that you’re using the lubricant that’s most conducive to natural conception?
Start by taking into consideration these quick tips:
- Be careful about choosing oil- or petroleum based lubricants, such as vegetable oil or Vaseline. Not only are they problematic for sperm, but they may actually be toxic to women’s bodies.
- Although some women find that water lacks enough lubrication for their needs, it may be the ticket for you. Best of all, it’s totally natural, so no fertility issues should result.
- With over-the-counter lubricants, you can always check the manufacturer’s or product’s website and see if there are any potential problems with using the lubricant if you’re trying to get pregnant. (Some contain spermicide, so choose carefully.)
