Male infertility breakthrough: Researcher creates sperm cells out of germ cells

Here at Reproductive Science Institute, we like to stay on top of the latest in fertility research, and a breakthrough was disclosed last week that we thought was interesting and exciting enough to share.

 In a study conducted on mice, researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel produced sperm cells from mouse testicular germ cells. The research was conducted by Professor Mahmoud Huleihel. “It may open strategies for infertile men who cannot generate sperm, and/or pre-pubertal cancer patients at risk of infertility due to radiotherapy,” Huleihel said. Results of the study were published Nov. 7 in the Asian Journal of Andrology.

 The fact that science is creating sperm cells from germ cells is thrilling, particularly for the hope and promise it gives to infertile men who have dreams of fathering their own biological children. Male Infertility News and Test Tube Sperm

It’s no secret that male infertility is taking as much prominence as is female infertility in the scientific race to find solutions for fertility problems in couples.

At the Reproductive Science Institute (RSI), conveniently located outside Philadelphia, we strive to stay on top of the latest developments to help those with male infertility conditions. Recently, there’s been a lot of press from an Asian study about the possibility of creating viable “test tube” sperm in a laboratory setting.

Fertility researchers in Japan used mice for their trials and were able to replicate sperm artificially within a ten-week period using stem cells from the mice. The sperm, once verified as viable, were implanted into mice testes, later removed, and then used to fertilize ova.

Mouse babies created from this sperm were not only conceived, but were born healthy. Those babies eventually grew to adulthood and reproduced as well, suggesting that the artificial sperm had no negative repercussions on the fertility of those babies who were conceived from them.

The breakthrough is a fascinating peek into the opportunities that fertility specialists have when it comes to combating male infertility. However, it’s important to note that while this research has caused some small earthquakes, it hasn’t produced any tsunamis in terms of watershed fertility treatment methodologies.

To Java or Not During Fertility Treatments?

If you’re accustomed to sipping a morning cup of coffee (or two… or more), you might not be happy to hear that some fertility specialists are suggesting that caffeine can be problematic for women undergoing fertility treatments.

This warning comes from a recent research study carried out in theUnited Statesat Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  During the study, it was noticed that caffeine appeared to reduce muscular activity in the fallopian tubes of mice.  Unfortunately, the lessened muscular activity had an effect on the natural contractions that move ova (eggs).  Thus, the ova could not make it to a prime location within the uterus in order to be fertilized.

Though the study hasn’t been conducted on humans, it’s having a huge impact thanks to the implications.

Of course, giving up that java isn’t easy, especially if you have a “Starbucks habit” like so many other Americans! 

To assist you in your quest to prepare your body for fertility treatments by reducing or eliminating your caffeine intake, we’d like to share some tips that have worked for other females in your situation:

  •  If you’re accustomed to drinking a lot of caffeine, don’t stop “cold turkey”.  Taper off gradually to avoid withdrawal.
  • Don’t forget that more than a cup o’ joe contains caffeine!  Soda, chocolate and coffee-flavored ice cream can pack a caffeinated wallop, too!
  • If you find yourself missing your morning routine, switch to decaf.  You’ll still get the benefit of having a mug of rich coffee.

Japanese Scientists Find Possible Genetic Link Predicting Infertility

From Tokyo, Japan, new findings are shedding light on some possible genetic links that can help doctors predict (and perhaps even overcome with the right interventions) infertility in their patients.

 

As with many studies of this nature, the research was conducted on mice.  The mice were implanted with fertilized eggs, after which the gene that apparently created the ideal uterine environment for maintaining a pregnancy was isolated.

 

Without the gene’s presence, the Japanese researchers discovered that the fertilized egg could not properly be maintained by the host body.  If the findings are able to translate to human females, it could assist reproductive health specialists in helping patients who are experiencing infertility.

 

Though more studies are expected to be conducted, it’s an exciting development in the science of infertility.

Men Dealing with Infertility May Want to Evaluate Their Omega-3 Intake

If you’re a man struggling with infertility, there’s an interesting way for you to naturally boost your fertility — your intake of foods containing omega-3 fatty acids.

Where are omega-3 fatty acids found?  Look for them in oily fish (think salmon and anchovies), enriched milk and enriched yogurt.  And make sure you eat enough of them to have the same positive effect that occurred when researchers from the University of Illinois studied omega-3 fatty acid diets in mice.

The mice were missing an amino acid (DHC) that rendered them infertile.  However, when they added omega-3 fatty acid to their diets in substantial quantities, their infertility was reversed.

It’s a fascinating result and could be a solution for some men experiencing infertility.
