What Is the “Biological Clock”, Anyway?

The term “biological clock” is often used to describe a woman’s fertility. But what in the world does it really mean? Essentially, it’s important to understand that it refers, basically, to the diminishing amount of viable eggs that she has in her body.

When a female is born, she has about two million eggs. That number never increases, so what she has is what her body will one day use to potentially conceive a child. But when a woman begins to menstruate, her number of eggs has already dropped by about four-fifths to 400,000 total eggs.

As the months and years progress, she will lose about 12,000 eggs annually. At that rate, she will have no eggs within 33 years or so from the onset of menses, which is the point where menopause takes over.

Of course, other factors are involved in what happens to her eggs. Illnesses and medical conditions can affect the strength and health of the eggs over time, sometimes leaving them unavailable for fertilization. For instance, chemotherapy and radiation for cancer can create female fertility issues. (This is why some women free their eggs prior to undergoing such types of treatments.)

Getting back to the “biological clock”, though, it’s critical for all women to realize that there’s no set time period. The aforementioned figures are only generalizations and statistics. That’s why it’s important not to make assumptions without medical assistance to back up theories.

A Healthy BMI is Fertility Friendly

Do you know your BMI (body mass index)? If not, it might be a good idea to find out if you’re trying to have a baby.BMI is a method of determining whether you’re at a weight that is healthy for your frame (judging by height). Though it can be somewhat skewed if you are very short or excessively tall, it’s typically a decent indicator for people of average height, which is the majority of the population.

In terms of fertility, your BMI should fall in the normal weight category, which is 18.5-24.9, to give you the best chances of success. So the closer you can get to that range, the better off you’ll be. (For a quick BMI calculator, check here.)

So how does BMI affect fertility? In a nutshell, if you’re underweight, your body may not be producing enough hormones to create an internal environment that’s conducive to regular ovulation and menses.

On the other end of the scale, if your BMI shows you to be overweight or obese, additional health problems (like early onset of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.) can make conception difficult.

Though having a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 won’t assure that you’ll be able to conceive naturally or with fertility treatments, you’ll be at a much better starting point weight-wise.

    Are you planning on having a child in 2010?  If so, you may want to take some steps to make sure you give yourself every chance of greeting 2011 with a baby (or a baby on the way.)

    What can you do to get yourself prepared?  Depending upon your situation, there are a number of items you should consider, including the following:

    1. Stop smoking.
    2. Stop drinking alcohol.
    3. Stop taking any illegal drugs.
    4. Stop taking any prescription drugs (if possible) that may hinder fertility.
    5. Start (or continue) a moderate exercise program.
    6. Stop using any form of birth control.
    7. Get checked for any kind of STDs.  (They often have no symptoms and can be an unrealized cause of infertility.)
    8. If you’ve had infertility problems, get assistance from a reputable reproductive science specialist.
    9. Eat a diet that’s high in vitamins and lower in saturated fats.
    10. Try to de-stress whenever possible.
    11. Start having sex every three days or so (except during menses) to maximize your chances of natural conception.
    12. If you’ve decided to consider surrogacy, start checking out clinics that can assist you in finding a surrogate.
    13. Men may want to start wearing boxers.  (Some studies have shown that briefs can cause sperm efficacy problems.)
    14. Males may also want to be careful when using cell phones.  (Cell phones placed in laps can possibly affect sperm quality and counts.)
    15. If you’re considering IVF and you’re employed, you may want to look into your rights when it comes to time off or short term disability leave (if necessary).
    16. For couples looking to conceive through the donation of a viable egg, it makes sense to connect with a clinic that offers a well-respected egg donor program.
