If you’re new to the world of fertility treatments or are just beginning your research into it, chances are you’re being inundated with acronyms, some of which you may not know. Here’s a big one that you’ll see often — ART. Assisted Reproductive Technology is nothing like the art you did in grade school, but it is an art form in its own right, one where science and technology work together to create a masterpiece — human life.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ART refers to fertility treatments that involve the handling of both eggs and sperm. This can include procedures in which eggs are surgically removed from a woman’s ovaries, combined with sperm in the laboratory, and returned to the woman’s body (in-vitro fertilization) or donated to another woman. ART does not include treatments in which only sperm are handled, such as intrauterine insemination or artificial insemination, or procedures in which a woman takes medicine only to stimulate egg production.
Since 1981, ART has been used in the United States to assist women in their quests to become pregnant. According to the CDC, today more than 1 percent of all infants born in the U.S. were conceived using ART. Are you interested in ART helping to create your own masterpiece? It may seem shocking to some people, but there are plenty of surrogacy “scams” on the web. These are perpetrated by con artists who prey on the desire of individuals and couples to have a child of their own.
But it’s easy to see why so many people turn to the Internet when they begin to seriously consider surrogacy; after all, we turn to the Internet for practically everything in this day and age. But it’s critical that if you’re seeking a surrogate, you not fall for the scammers.
As fertility specialists, we’re very, very cautious when it comes to surrogacy. We select our surrogates as you would want us to — with the welfare of the child above all else. Our surrogate candidates are thoroughly vetted using guidelines in accordance with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. And if couples or individuals bring potential surrogates to us, we still go through a very rigorous process to make sure everyone involved is ready for this step.
By all means do your information-gathering with your computer. But if it comes time to seriously discuss surrogacy, please do so with a fertility specialist. It’s the safest route to take.

In an interview with People magazine, starlet Helena Bonham Carter spoke candidly about her journey to become a second-time mother.
Bonham Carter, who is over 40, began taking Clomid as part of a fertility treatment, but did not respond favorably to the medication. From there, she tried alternative medicine, but still had no success.
After beginning to investigate IVF, Bonham Carter became pregnant naturally. However, she’s been quick to note that she would have turned to at least one round of IVF had she not received the good news.

There are plenty of advertisements on the Internet suggesting that couples go to places like Asia and Eastern Europe for lower-cost IVF treatments. Unfortunately, these adverts are just preying on the emotions of those who are having difficulty conceiving.
If you’ve been tempted to leave the country (or continent, for that matter) to get IVF treatments, just remember these thoughts:
- The Money Savings Are Not What They Seem. Sure, you may spend less on the IVF treatment, but what about paying for the flight, hotel, food, etc., in the foreign country? That can add up quickly.
- It Can Be Tough to Check Credentials of Overseas Fertility Specialists. Sure, a fertility specialist might claim to be “the best”… but it can be very difficult to substantiate those claims.
- If Something Goes Wrong, You’ll Be Far from Home. Because this is medicine, it’s important to keep in mind that unexpected outcomes can happen. Being in a foreign country and faced with sudden problems can be terrifying.
Please consider going to a fertility specialist (or many) for your IVF treatments who is from your own country before heading on a jet plane to somewhere afar. It’s the safest way to protect yourself.

Recent reports have suggested that Asian-American women may have more trouble conceiving than their Caucasian counterparts.
With all elements being relatively equal — where the women come from, their ages, their lifestyles — Asian-American females had fewer successful pregnancies (naturally or through IVF) than did Caucasians.
What isn’t clear is why this seems to be the case. Could it be that Asian-American women are typically small in stature? Could it be something that Asian-Americans tend to eat or use for medicine (such as herbs or foreign foods)?
The good news is that Asian-Americans CAN conceive; it just might take a bit longer for them than for a Caucasian friend.
