Men – Could Antioxidants Help Combat Fertility Issues?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Male infertility is a topic that’s becoming more mainstream in the media as well as widespread in terms of how it’s being studied.  Consequently, there’s a growing amount of evidence (both anecdotal and some scientific) that antioxidants may indeed help men dealing with fertility issues.

New Zealand scientists have been conducting studies on the topic of how to assist men with their fertility problems.  As a result, they have developed a theory that taking antioxidants (e.g., vitamin E, zinc) can help guys dealing with male infertility.

To be sure, the men that were studied were not entirely infertile.  They had sperm healthy enough to fertilize an egg, but their sperm counts were lower than normal.  However, when they began to take doses of antioxidants, their sperm counts increased.  The New Zealand researchers have suggested this is proof that their theory is sound; other scientists aren’t convinced.

So… does this mean it’s time for men to OD on antioxidants?

Not really.

But even if the hypothesis is hogwash, men with male infertility can and will still benefit from taking better care of themselves… and that may just include adding appropriate amounts of antioxidants into their daily diets.

FYI… 10 FOODS HIGH IN ANTIOXIDANTS

The “Going Natural” Method of Fertility Treatments

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

At RSI, we’re open to any forms of fertility treatment, even those that might not be considered “mainstream”.  But sometimes, we see men and women who have tried homeopathic, so-called “natural” fertility treatments for years and years… only to realize that they’ve wasted their time — and dollars – on these methods.

If you’ve been wooed by the “go natural to get pregnant” headlines touting fertility treatments made up of everything from herbs to mild dietary changes, there’s usually not anything innately wrong with trying such methods to conceive.  In fact, many of our patients try or have tried alternative methods to have a child.

The real issue comes into play when patients have spent copious amounts of time and money investing in practices that have not produced any well-documented results.

Our recommendation is to bring all your thoughts and questions, including those involving “alternative” remedies, to a trained, reputable fertility specialist for a consultation.  That way, you can be assured that you’re not wasting any time on methods that are unlikely to work while simultaneously discussing all the choices that are available to you, including those that are homeopathic.

Congratulations to Vern Yip and Partner!

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

If you’ve ever watched Trading Spaces, the phenomenal program that aired on TLC several years ago, you were no doubt mesmerized by the abilities of Vern Yip.  And now he’s about to become a daddy… for the second time!

Yip and his partner worked with a surrogate to allow them to become parents again.  And (through their media reps) it appears that they couldn’t be happier!

Of course, you don’t have to be a Hollywood star or a household name to consider surrogacy; in fact, it’s becoming more and more acceptable in America as the facts (rather than myths) of fertility issues begin to filter into the mainstream.

If you’re considering surrogacy or would just like to know more about the process, feel free to visit RSI at our Philadelphia area office.  We’ll be happy to give you a consultation and help you determine if working with a surrogate is the best solution for you (and/or your partner.)

And, as we always say when we mention a “happy ending” for any person… we wish Yip and his family all the joys that parenthood can bring!

American “Test Tube” Baby Becomes Mom

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Way back when, the term “fertility treatment” wasn’t in vogue.

Instead, children born via assisted reproductive technologies were often referred to in the media (and conversation) as “test tube babies.”  Fast forward 30 years and infertility has become a household word (though a still misunderstood concept on many fronts, something this blog is dedicated to remedying through information.)

This past week, a momentous occurrence took place when the first American “test tube” baby, Elizabeth Carr (b. 1981), became  a mom on Thursday, August 5.

Though Carr did not use any kind of fertility treatments to conceive (always the first question she seems to be asked!), her coming “full circle” emphasizes that reproductive health has grown to be mainstream in only a generation or two.  Not only is this exciting from a social perspective, but it’s fascinating from a medical one as well.

We wish Carr the best as she begins her life as a mommy… and we thank her for continuing to share her world with everyone.

  • Infertility and “The Morgans”

    Monday, December 21st, 2009

Reviews are in for “Did You Hear about The Morgans?”  In general, they’re not pretty, but the evaluations of movie critics are beyond the scope of this article.

The real problem with the script may be that, once again, infertility is thrown into the mix as a catalyst for “marriage problems”.  Hollywood’s view of infertility seems to be as a writing device; consequently, it’s rarely treated with any kind of genuine regard but rather glossed over.

In reality, though, infertility is so much more complex.  It’s also highly personal, generating more discussions than simply film-style “We can’t have a baby” ones.

It would be nice to see a mainstream movie appear that honestly deals with the layers of infertility instead of using it as some kind of technique to explain away marital difficulties.
