From India comes word that a 66-year-old woman who was previously childless has given birth to triplets. Because of her advanced age, she used IVF treatments in order to reach her dream of becoming a mother.
Though there are well-wishers from around the world who send nothing but good thoughts her way, there are others who believe having a child (not to mention triplets) at 66 has serious ethical concerns. This is compounded by the fact that a 72-year-old who gave birth to her first child about a year-and-a-half ago at age 70 is now dying.
At RSI, we spend a great deal of time analyzing all aspects of any woman or couple’s physical, psychological and emotional states before proceeding with IVF treatments. In our experience, there is definitely a fine line between when fertility treatments are warranted and when the time has passed for such measures.
This is one of the reasons we encourage women and men dealing with infertility (or what they believe to be infertility) to connect with us sooner rather than later. We’ll give sound advice not dictated by intentions to get media attention… and we’ll always be straightforward with recommendations. It’s what we do as ethical physicians in the reproductive health science field.

It’s a terrific use of technology — iPhone users can now monitor their fertility treatments.
Though not being used widely right now, Australian scientists plan to have couples (and/or patients) monitor their IVF treatmentsusing their iPhones and/or Blackberries. This will enable the Australian fertility specialists to help the patients make sure they are keeping up with their injections, scans, blood tests, etc.
The original trial of this program was tried by 17 persons undergoing fertility treatments and was met with positive feedback.
No doubt it will soon be used in the United States as well, though likely on a somewhat limited basis at first.
It gives even more credence to the notion that “there’s an app for that”!

It’s official — IVF treatment has helped Celine Dion conceive again… and this time she’s gotten a very special surprise!
When Dion announced that her latest round of IVF treatment had, indeed, worked, she included a bit of a shocker: She’s not having one child. She’s having TWO!
So it’s twins for Celine Dion and her husband. The twins will join their younger sibling later this year.
We at RSI are always pleased to hear about successful IVF treatments. We wish Celine and her family the best.

She would have been the oldest person ever to receive IVF treatment, but Britain’s Susan Tollefsen has decided that 59 is “too old”.
Tollefsen cites concerns about her health and age when asked about why she’s chosen not to undergo the procedure, even though she has been approved. She also worries about the future of her daughter, who was conceived by IVF three years ago.
Her suggestion to women her age? Tollefsen understands their desires to have a child, but cautions them not to “risk it”.
Most doctors and clinics in the United States will not perform IVF treatments on women over 50 (and some put this number lower) due to concerns for their safety and the safety of their babies.

Courtney Cox Arquette gave birth to her daughter, Coco, in 2004 thanks to help she received from IVF treatments.
Now, Cox Arquette has announced that she’s ready to have another child and would be willing to again undergo IVF to achieve her goals of a larger family.
Cox Arquette is 45, and as our last post on Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross notes, a woman in her mid-40s may not have the eggs necessary for IVF to succeed. In that case, egg donation is often considered. (Or, in the case of Sarah Jessica Parker, surrogacy.)
We wish Cox Arquette and her family much success regardless of which way they decide to go with this personal issue.

It’s no secret that megastar Celine Dion has gone through IVF treatments in the past. In fact, she’s been quite vocal about her experiences. But for Dion, as happens for many women, a latest round of IVF treatments have ended in a miscarriage. To Dion’s credit, however, she’s not going to give up hope. Though she’s headed back to Las Vegas for more entertaining, she still has thoughts of conceiving a baby on her mind.
As Dion noted in a recent interview, she’s going to keep attempting IVF “until it works”.
We wish her much luck and applaud her for her positive attitude and willingness to discuss this personal situation.

Research has proven that stress plays a critical role in the success of any fertility treatment, especially IVF. But how can you relax when all you can think about is whether or not you’ll be able to conceive?
If you’re having difficulty calming your mind and your body, try these tips to de-stress before and during your IVF treatments:
- Lay off (or significantly reduce) your intake of caffeine. It might “wake you up”, but it can also make you agitated.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Rest is one of the most beneficial “gifts” you can give yourself.
- Take up a relaxing hobby. Some individuals like to scrapbook, others like to knit. Some cook, some read, some write… the list goes on and on. Do whatever calms you and allows you to focus your energies in a positive direction.
- Learn to meditate. You don’t have to be spiritually-inclined to embrace the powers of meditation.
- Try yoga pre-IVF. Yoga, when performed correctly, can prep your body, heart and soul.
- Eat healthfully. If you’re investing in IVF, yo u must invest in your nutrition, too.
- Stay away from toxic people. Though this can be easier said than done, whenever you have the choice, choose to avoid persons who want to bring you down.
What methods have you used to de-stress during your fertility treatments? We’d like to know!

One of the common concerns faced by numerous women undergoing (or planning to undergo) IVF treatment is that they’ll have to become intimately acquainted with needles. Though most females simply accept this as a reality, some do decline IVF based on their serious loathing of shots.
Reproductive health specialists and scientists have long recognized this stumbling block and are now testing a shot-free IVF treatment. This needleless treatment takes the form of a vaginal progesterone cream, which requires no invasive techniques.
Rates for pregnancies for the small group of participants who helped with initial research were the same as traditional IVF treatments (with needles.) However, some women did still experience side effects in line with shot-related IVF procedures.

Secondary infertility isn’t something most couples think about; after all, if you can get pregnant once, you’ll get pregnant again. Right?
Actually, this doesn’t always play out. Every attempt at conception is unique, and secondary infertility can arise at any time.
If you’d like to learn more about this condition from a couple who experienced it firsthand (and ultimately had triplets thanks to IVF treatments), check out the winners of the recent “In the Know” film festival. Their 10-minute video really puts a face to a condition that isn’t discussed often enough.

What many women, especially those who work outside the home, don’t realize is that IVF treatments can seriously impact the way you live your life. Bedrest, avoidance of heavy lifting and frequent shots can all contribute to one thing — your inability to be the best employee you can.
It would be a perfect world if employers didn’t care about losing you for weeks at a time during your IVF treatments, but the world isn’t ideal. That means you have to figure out ways to keep your employer happy while you undergo IVF.
Below are a few ways to maintain your workload:
- Discuss options with your personnel manager. You may be able to work from home on a laptop during periods of bedrest.
- If you have many weeks of vacation “stockpiled”, perhaps you could use it during IVF treatments and your company could hire a temporary worker to complete your assignments.
- Try to be accommodating to your employer. For instance, don’t schedule your IVF treatments during the holiday season if you work in retail.
- Look into short-term leave options with your personnel manager. You may have options you didn’t realize existed. And if you don’t, it still never hurts to ask.
- Be creative and go to your supervisor with solutions, not a “I’m doing this… so what are you going to do about it?” attitude. No one likes to feel like his or her back is “against the wall”. Be positive.
Of course, even the most lenient employer has his or her limit, meaning that there will likely be some stressful moments. But the more you plan ahead, the fewer those difficulties will be.
