Sunny Skies Ahead for Women Needing IVF

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Melatonin, the compound that is found in the body and has been shown to help regulate sleep rhythms as well as increase some people’s resistance to conditions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), may be a boon for women going through IVF treatments

In fact, a presentation of a study at the World Congress of Fertility and Sterility strongly proved that females who were given doses of melatonin during IVF treatments were shown to double their chances at pregnancy.

The scientists who initiated the study feel that because melatonin is an oxidizer, it may help to mitigate damage to eggs that have been harmed.  During their IVF treatmentstudy at Yamaguchi University Graduate School of Medicine, researchers discovered that women who were given melatonin more than doubled their chances of having an egg fertilized through the IVF process.

More research will be done, of course, but the findings could open the doors for stronger success rates among females undergoing IVF treatments

  • What Would You Spend on IVF?

    Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

In the latest issue of Red Magazine (out of the UK for Americans unfamiliar with the publication), a survey revealed that women seeking fertility treatments (specifically IVF) would willingly spend up to £15,000 out of pocket for the procedure.

The IVF survey was conducted by the magazine and took into consideration the answers of around 2,000 females between the ages of 30 and 45.  A substantial 10% of respondents noted that they would even spend up to £50,000 to have a child.

    Translated to U.S. dollars, £15,000 equals about $23,497.30; £50,000 equals around $78,324.40.

So the question for you is… how much would you be willing to spend on IVF treatment?  (Your answer can be in pounds, Euros, dollars, whatever the currency you use…)

  • In the News – Quebec Inundated with IVF Requests

    Monday, August 9th, 2010

As we’ve blogged about before, Quebec is now covering up to three rounds of IVF treatment for its citizens.

This IVF program, which is federally funded and the first of its kind in Canada, has received a great deal of press.  It’s also generated interest from would-be participants, so much so that Quebec doctors and clinics who practice in the area of reproductive health science have been inundated with requests.  (Note:  The program officially started on August 1.)

Many in Quebec are concerned that the demand for this free IVF treatment outweighs what can be supplied at this point; however, the government feels that it will eventually be able to meet the needs of the Quebec citizens.

We’ll keep tabs on the outcomes of this program and deliver more news as it becomes available…

  • New IVF Update from Celine Dion

    Friday, July 9th, 2010

As we’ve blogged about before, Celine Dion recently announced that she was pregnant with twins after undergoing six rounds of IVF treatment.

A few days ago, 19-weeks pregnant Dion announced the gender of her twins, and it’s baby blue all the way!  Two boys will be joining the family (mom, dad and 9-year-old big brother who was also conceived after fertility treatments) at the end of the year.

Reportedly, Dion is thrilled with the outcome of her IVF journey, which she has admitted in the past hasn’t been simple.

A Little Bit of Info about IVF…

IVFstands for in vitro fertilization, a medical process whereby a human egg (ova) is fertilized by a human sperm outside the womb.  The fertilized egg is then transferred to the womb of the mother (or, in cases where a woman cannot carry a child to term because of complications, an approved surrogate.)

The rate of success during IVF varies widely depending on a number of factors, including the age of the mother, the ability of the reproductive health specialist, the health of the parents, etc.   However, thanks to medical improvements, live birth rates continue to increase around the world.

  • IVF Treatment and the “Lucky 13″ Couple

    Friday, June 11th, 2010

There’s a huge buzz going on right now about the couple from Britain who underwent fertility treatments (specifically IVF) 13 times over 7 years in order to get pregnant with their twins.  (The girls are very healthy at two month old.)

While we’re thrilled that the man and woman had a positive outcome, we do feel that it’s important for readers to understand that this represents an unusual story in the world of fertility treatments for a number of reasons:

    1.  Most couples don’t continue to do IVF this many times.  Nor should couples intending to consider IVF worry that they’ll have to go through round after round.  Usually, if IVF doesn’t work a few times, patients will choose other routes.

    2.  Not all fertility treatments are extremely costly.  The article highlights how much the couple spent over time, but their experience is an individual one.

    3.  Going abroad for fertility treatments is a last resort.  Perhaps in western Europe it’s more common to head to other parts of Europe to undergo IVF, but Americans are usually cautioned against going this drastic route, especially when there are exceptional fertility specialists around the states.

Again, we’re very happy for this couple and glad they feel so overjoyed at reaching their dream of becoming parents.  For them, 13 indeed has been tremendously lucky!

  • Don’t Be Fooled by “Low Cost” IVF Ads from Overseas

    Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

There are plenty of advertisements on the Internet suggesting that couples go to places like Asia and Eastern Europe for lower-cost IVF treatments.  Unfortunately, these adverts are just preying on the emotions of those who are having difficulty conceiving.

If you’ve been tempted to leave the country (or continent, for that matter) to get IVF treatments, just remember these thoughts:

    • The Money Savings Are Not What They Seem.  Sure, you may spend less on the IVF treatment, but what about paying for the flight, hotel, food, etc., in the foreign country?  That can add up quickly.
    • It Can Be Tough to Check Credentials of Overseas Fertility Specialists.  Sure, a fertility specialist might claim to be “the best”… but it can be very difficult to substantiate those claims.
    • If Something Goes Wrong, You’ll Be Far from Home.  Because this is medicine, it’s important to keep in mind that unexpected outcomes can happen.  Being in a foreign country and faced with sudden problems can be terrifying.

Please consider going to a fertility specialist (or many) for your IVF treatments who is from your own country before heading on a jet plane to somewhere afar.  It’s the safest way to protect yourself.

  • IVF Treatment Helps Celine Dion Conceive Again!

    Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

It’s official — IVF treatment has helped Celine Dion conceive again… and this time she’s gotten a very special surprise!

When Dion announced that her latest round of IVF treatment had, indeed, worked, she included a bit of a shocker:  She’s not having one child.  She’s having TWO!

So it’s twins for Celine Dion and her husband.  The twins will join their younger sibling later this year.

We at RSI are always pleased to hear about successful IVF treatments.  We wish Celine and her family the best.

  • 59-Year-Old British Woman Decides Not to Have IVF

    Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

She would have been the oldest person ever to receive IVF treatment, but Britain’s Susan Tollefsen has decided that 59 is “too old”.

Tollefsen cites concerns about her health and age when asked about why she’s chosen not to undergo the procedure, even though she has been approved.  She also worries about the future of her daughter, who was conceived by IVF three years ago.

Her suggestion to women her age?  Tollefsen understands their desires to have a child, but cautions them not to “risk it”.

Most doctors and clinics in the United States will not perform IVF treatments on women over 50 (and some put this number lower) due to concerns for their safety and the safety of their babies.

Should Prisoners Be Allowed to Get IVF Treatment?

    Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

It’s a strange case that’s been hitting the newspapers and websites:

A 45-year-old Australian prisoner with a year left on her sentence (she was convicted of welfare fraud) has requested IVF treatment. She argues that she cannot wait until she’s released to have the procedure done because in Australia, the maximum age that a woman is allowed to undergo IVF is 46… and she’ll be 46 before she’s free from jail. (As an interesting side note, she began the IVF process before she was imprisoned.)

It’s a very touchy subject for many reasons, including the rights of prisoners.

What do you think about the case? Should a prisoner who will soon be released be allowed to get IVF treatment?

  • IVF Treatment without Needles?

    Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

One of the common concerns faced by numerous women undergoing (or planning to undergo) IVF treatment is that they’ll have to become intimately acquainted with needles.  Though most females simply accept this as a reality, some do decline IVF based on their serious loathing of shots.

Reproductive health specialists and scientists have long recognized this stumbling block and are now testing a shot-free IVF treatment.  This needleless treatment takes the form of a vaginal progesterone cream, which requires no invasive techniques.

Rates for pregnancies for the small group of participants who helped with initial research were the same as traditional IVF treatments (with needles.)  However, some women did still experience side effects in line with shot-related IVF procedures.
