How Old is Too Old for Fertility Treatments?

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

From India comes a news story that has raised many eyebrows:  A mom gave birth.

Why is this such a big deal, you ask?  Because the woman in question is 58.

This brings us back to a serious topic of debate around the globe:  When is a woman too old to receive fertility treatments?

Though there doesn’t seem to be one definitive answer, there does seem to be a general consensus in the medical community that by a woman’s late 40s, the risks begin to significantly outweigh the potential fertility treatment outcomes.  And by “risks”, we can mean serious (even fatal) consequences.

Of course, the “appropriate” age may not always be directed by the scientific community, but by social mores.

So we ask you:  When is a woman “too old” for fertility treatments?

  • Why You Should Be Careful about Leaving the U.S. for Fertility Treatments

    Saturday, April 17th, 2010

There are some couples that have believed the media hype that it’s terribly expensive and difficult to get fertility treatments in the U.S.  So they’re setting up appointments in Europe, Canada and India.

This type of knee-jerk reaction is detrimental for a number of reasons, including:

    • You don’t know the real training of your overseas fertility doctor.  You have to go on what he/she says.
    • You may save a little money on the fertility treatments, but you’ll have to pay for the plane ride, the living quarters once you’re there, food, etc.  And that can be costlier than you might expect, even in countries where the U.S. dollar will stretch a little farther than it does in the States.
    • The fertility treatments may not be performed in the most up-to-date hospitals or clinics.
    • Fertility drugs and procedures could be subpar… or even dangerous.

Obviously, it’s up to you to decide what’s right when it comes to fertility treatments.  But we urge you to work with local and regional reproductive health care providers before looking outside your country’s borders.

(Remember:  The grass is NOT always greener.)

As we mentioned in a previous post, infertility doesn’t just affect couples in North America.  In fact, it’s a worldwide concern, as evidenced by these recent articles:

    - From Allahbad, India:  A recent “infertility camp” was offered to about 150 couples.  During this “camp”, the partners were given free consultations about the precise fertility issues they were having.

    - From Australia: Data is now indicating that more Australian men than Australian women are infertile.  This research was conducted by a group called “Fertility First”.  Possible culprits include drug/chemical exposure, metal toxicity, alcohol/drug abuse and obesity, among others.

    - From Petaling Jaya, Malaysia:  Malaysia’s fertility rates are dropping dramatically, according to a United Nations Children’s Fund report.  This has led to more couples seeking IVF treatments in the country.
