Focus on Male Infertility – Lifestyle Changes for Higher Success Rates

Friday, July 29th, 2011

If you’re a man who has been told (or who believes) he has male infertility, it may be wise to make some lifestyle changes. Though such changes may not alter the infertility enough to enable you to conceive without reproductive technology assistance, they have been shown to make your body produce better quality sperm to be used during such procedures as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Working with your fertility specialist, you may be asked to make some or all of the following daily habit modifications. Be open to them; they are meant to combat the effects of male infertility, not to make your day-to-day experiences difficult!

1. Smoking cessation – Smoking has been known to reduce the quality of sperm, so if you’ve been looking for a reason to quit, now is the perfect time.

2. Reduction or elimination of alcohol consumption – Alcohol may contribute to male infertility, so opt for another drink while you’re working with a fertility specialist.

3. Elimination of drugs – Obviously, illegal drugs are not to be taken under any circumstances, but some over-the-counter medications may also be counterproductive to dealing with fertility issues. Make sure you let your fertility specialist know everything you’re taking so he or she can make recommendations.

4. Reduction of intercourse or ejaculation – Though it might seem counterintuitive, it’s not necessarily a good idea to ejaculate every day. Depending upon what your physician suggests, you may be asked to have sexual intercourse on a very strict schedule, thus increasing the chances that your sperm will be more viable.

5. Reduction of stressors – This can be easier said than done, of course. But it’s important for men and women struggling with infertility to reduce the stressors in their lives as much as they realistically can.

6. Modification of exercise habits – It’s been shown that excessive exercising can be harmful to sperm quality, and some exercises, such as cycling, have been linked to male infertility (due to pressures on the testes.)

7. Reduction of weight – Though weight plays more of a role in female infertility than it does in male infertility, it’s still a good idea to lose extra pounds, especially if your BMI has reached a rating that would qualify you as extremely overweight or obese.

25 Contributors to Male and Female Infertility, part 1

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Ever wonder what causes or contributes to a woman or man’s infertility?   Our 3-part series takes a brief look at 25 factors that can result in infertility for males and females.

  1. Adhesions – Adhesions inside a female’s body may be the result of surgery or may occur naturally.  When adhesions are present, the body cannot function at full capacity.  In the case of infertility, adhesions may prohibit the sperm from fertilizing the egg, create issues in the fallopian tubes or hinder fertilization in other ways.
  2. Age – After 35, a woman is much more likely to struggle with fertility issues.  In fact, some women lose their fertility levels in their early 30s.  And most women in their early 40s will find it very difficult to conceive naturally without medical intervention.
  3. Behavioral Factors – For both men and women, behavioral factors such as smoking cigarettes, cigars and marijuana; drinking excessive amounts of alcohol; and taking prescription or illegal drugs can contribute to infertility.
  4. Blocked Fallopian Tubes – If a woman’s fallopian tubes are blocked, a necessary part of conception cannot occur.
  5. Cancer – There are many types of cancer in both males and females that can contribute to infertility, including colon cancer, testicular cancer, uterine cancer, stomach cancer and cervical cancer, among others.  Even if the cancer is successfully defeated, fertility may be compromised or destroyed.
  6. Congenital Abnormalities – Some individuals are born with congenital abnormalities which limit or prohibit fertility.  Often, these people do not realize they have these issues until they try to have a child.
  7. Damage to the Male Genitals – The male genitalia includes many parts and if any are significantly injured, infertility can result.  The good news is that some injuries can be reversed and only temporarily affect fertility.

Helping Your Fertility-Related New Year’s Resolutions Come True

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Are you planning on having a child in 2010?  If so, you may want to take some steps to make sure you give yourself every chance of greeting 2011 with a baby (or a baby on the way.)

What can you do to get yourself prepared?  Depending upon your situation, there are a number of items you should consider, including the following:

  1. Stop smoking.
  2. Stop drinking alcohol.
  3. Stop taking any illegal drugs.
  4. Stop taking any prescription drugs (if possible) that may hinder fertility.
  5. Start (or continue) a moderate exercise program.
  6. Stop using any form of birth control.
  7. Get checked for any kind of STDs.  (They often have no symptoms and can be an unrealized cause of infertility.)
  8. If you’ve had infertility problems, get assistance from a reputable reproductive science specialist.
  9. Eat a diet that’s high in vitamins and lower in saturated fats.
  10. Try to de-stress whenever possible.
  11. Start having sex every three days or so (except during menses) to maximize your chances of natural conception.
  12. If you’ve decided to consider surrogacy, start checking out clinics that can assist you in finding a surrogate.
  13. Men may want to start wearing boxers.  (Some studies have shown that briefs can cause sperm efficacy problems.)
  14. Males may also want to be careful when using cell phones.  (Cell phones placed in laps can possibly affect sperm quality and counts.)
  15. If you’re considering IVF and you’re employed, you may want to look into your rights when it comes to time off or short term disability leave (if necessary).
  16. For couples looking to conceive through the donation of a viable egg, it makes sense to connect with a clinic that offers a well-respected egg donor program.
