Martha Stewart’s Grandchild Conceived through Fertility Treatments

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Martha Stewart is now a grandmother, thanks to the fertility treatments her daughter, Alexis, underwent.

Since 2007, Alexis had been trying to have a child using fertility treatments.  Now, she’s become the mom to a baby girl.

The 45-year-old Alexis chose the surrogate route after investing time and dollars in a variety of fertility treatments, including IVF.  After 3+ years of trying, she decided to opt for surrogacy when other means simply weren’t working for her.

As is typically the case in matters of conception and birth via surrogate, neither the donor nor the surrogate have been publicly named.  There’s no information available as to whether Alexis knew either before the conception.

By all accounts, Alexis and Martha are thrilled.  Said Alexis in a People magazine interview:  “Having my own kid is the most important thing in my life.”

And on another happy note, Martha has decided NOT to embrace the moniker “Grandma”.  Instead, her new grandbaby will be taught to call her “Martha”… like the rest of the world does!

We wish Alexis and Martha all the happiness in the world!

Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster and IVF Treatments

Friday, November 5th, 2010

The rich and famous aren’t any less likely to need fertility treatments than everyday individuals and couples.  That’s one of the reasons that it comes as no surprise to learn that Rod Stewart and his wife spent over two years investing in IVF treatments to conceive.

In August, the couple (Stewart is married to Penny Lancaster) announced that they were pregnant; however, what the world didn’t realize is that it took so long for them to have a child together.

Stewart, 65, and Lancaster, 39, have begun to discuss their IVF treatmentjourney publicly, including the struggles they experienced in their relationship while trying to have a baby.  As Stewart has said, it was an “emotional rollercoaster” ride the couple endured as they waited.

Stewart and Lancaster went through three rounds of IVF treatments before hearing the good news.  Though that sounds like many, various sources indicate that the average number of IVF treatment cycles needed before conception hovers closer to four.

As with all couples who have taken the fertility walk together, we wish Stewart and Lancaster all the happiness in the world.

Fertility Treatments are Changing Lives around the World

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

baby-feet1Since the first “test tube baby” (a child named Louise Brown) was born in England in 1978, more than 3 million children have come into the world thanks to fertility treatments… and more are likely to become part of our society as reproductive health science procedures become even more refined.

There’s little doubt that fertility treatments have radically changed the way women and men feel about themselves, their relationships and their lives.  Whereas before there was little hope for someone who couldn’t conceive, now there is a decent chance that, if nothing else, an answer can be found to his, her or their issue.

This type of paradigm shift in the way we think about conception and birth is powerful.  It’s also stressful on some levels, as the decision to embark upon fertility treatments is a very personal journey that takes a lot of soul-searching.

Fortunately, the next generation (and the generation after that and so on) will likely experience less of the stigma of seeking fertility treatments than do some modern individuals and couples.  As more education and information becomes available, the realities and understanding of procedures like IVF and egg donation will no doubt become less mysterious and more commonplace.

In the meantime, we feel privileged to be a part of the industry that’s brought happiness to so many people throughout the world for the past 30+ years.
