Obesity and Infertility

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Obesity has become an issue that is constantly affecting Americans.  Not only has it become problematic for children in school and the elderly, but it’s begun to take its toll on many women’s ability to have children.

Though obesity is often only part of the issue for a woman who is unable to conceive, losing weight can dramatically improve a female’s chances of having a child naturally either with or without fertility treatments.

The main problem, of course, is that dropping pounds isn’t easy; if it were, people would have no trouble getting down to manageable weights.

Thus, if you’re considering fertility treatments and you are clinically obese, it’s important for you to sit down with your physician or specialist and discuss options for slimming down.

Fortunately, you don’t have to look like a model to be at a healthier weight.  Small changes in diet and exercise can have dramatic impacts.

Don’t allow your weight to keep you from the potential of becoming a parent.  It’s almost 2011… make getting healthier so you can be the fittest parent possible one of your resolutions!

Causes of Infertility Aren’t Always Complicated

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

For many couples, hearing the word “infertility” brings forth assumptions of serious problems that cannot be easily remedied.  However, for many people, infertility is only a temporary state and can be reversed, especially if the problem is one of irregular ovulation.

Many women do not realize that they are ovulating at inconsistent intervals.  Regardless of the reasons for their problems, the end result is an inability to become pregnant due to sperm being unable to essentially “connect” with an egg.

Reproductive health science specialists will be able to determine if a woman is ovulating regularly; if not, she can try a number of different ways to get her body to a regular rhythm through a variety of means, including diet, exercise and medication.

Remember that infertility is only a symptom.  Until the problem comes to the forefront, it’s just a diagnosis and shouldn’t cause immediate bells of alarm or worry.

  • Weight Can Be a Significant Factor in Fertility Treatments

    Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

If you’re a woman who is either seriously overweight OR underweight, you may want to get your diet in check before moving forward with fertility treatments.

Weight plays a definite factor in how well a woman’s body will respond to all types of fertility treatments, from Clomid to IVF.  So it’s important to prepare if you predict that fertility treatments will be in your future.

How can you make sure your weight is in line?  BMI is often used by physicians as a measure of how appropriate your weight is based on your height.  While it’s not always perfect (if you have a lot of muscle mass or are unusually short or tall, the results can be skewed), it’s a good starting point.

Another measure can be just how you look and feel.  Most people in the obese and underweight categories are aware that their bodies are out of proportion from where they should be.  In this case, a diet and exercise regimen may be warranted.

As with all lifestyle change programs, it’s a good idea to talk with your family doctor first.  Explain to him or her that you’re going to be considering fertility treatments and that you want your weight to be in your favor, not against you.  Then, you can proceed as he or she suggests.
