Could Perimenopause Be Contributing to Your Infertility?

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Women in your mid-to-late 30s… have you been experiencing any (or all) of the following symptoms?

  •  lowered sex drive
  • unexplained weight gain (especially around your middle)
  • hot flashes
  • night sweats
  • shorter- or longer-than-usual cycles between periods
  • heavier-than-usual periods (sometimes including blood clots)
  • more painful/uncomfortable periods than before infertility

If so, you may be surprised to learn that your body could be entering into perimenopause.

As the name suggests, perimenopause is the stage before full-blown menopause.  Though it typically is seen in women who are approximately 40 years or older, it can absolutely affect those in their 30s.  And because it is a result of changing hormone levels, fertility changes are to be expected during this phase of life.

Perimenopause can last anywhere from a few years to a decade, so it’s not an indication that menopause is “just around the corner”.  With that being said, it can and does cause many couples to have issues when it comes to conception, so it’s important to get a diagnosis if you’re not getting pregnant within a few months of trying sans contraception.

If you feel that you might be entering into perimenopause, never fear.  Go to a reproductive specialist and discuss your concerns.  If you are perimenopausal, he or she can help you identify a variety of fertility treatments to give you the best chances of having a child naturally.

Triplets Born Over a Decade Apart

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

It’s not rare to hear of multiple births when discussing the subject of assisted reproductive techniques; however, it’s quite unusual for IVF triplets to be born 11 years apart from one another!  But that’s exactly what happened last month…

This past December, 2010, twin sisters from Britain received a wonderful holiday surprise – another female sibling to round out their family.  And best of all, this sibling was particularly special, as she was, in all essence, their biological “twin”, thus turning the girls into triplets.

All three were born using IVF whereby the embryos had been fertilized outside the womb and then medically implanted into the biological mother, Lisa Shepherd.

The Shepherds had originally given birth to their twins 11 years ago, but decided last year they wanted to use the remaining embryos (left from the original IVF treatment) to try to conceive one more time.  As it was a success, they now have three girls who are essentially “triplets” of differing ages.

Again, this is an unusual story, but a joyful one.  It also shows the viability of embryos that have been frozen for years and then used later for IVF.  As reproductive science research advances farther, there’s little doubt that even more amazing “in the news” IVF stories will appear.

Embryo Frozen 20 Years Still Viable

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

In news that pleasantly surprised fertility specialists around the globe and heartened would-be parents, an embryo that had been frozen for 20 years was used to fertilize a 42-year-old woman who could not conceive naturally.  (The two-decade old embryo was from an unrelated donor.)  The woman is a resident of the United States and gave birth in May to a healthy boy.

The news item raises some interesting questions, including how long an embryo can stay viable while frozen.  Some fertility doctors speculate that 20 years isn’t even close to the length of time that’s potentially possible.  One recent study even estimated that the passage of 40 years wouldn’t be a problem if the embryo had been stored correctly.

This gives great hope to women who decide to freeze their eggs at an early age if they know they are going to undergo a procedure such as radiation or chemotherapy which can rob them of their fertility.  Using a surrogate, if necessary, they can use their own frozen embryos to create new life.

Australia’s First IVF Baby Turns the Big 3-0!

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

It’s an exciting time to be in the fertility field!  Not only are there plenty of new procedures and tools available to couples and individuals dealing with infertility, but there’s also plenty to celebrate… including the 30th birthday of Australia’s first IVF baby!

Conceived with the help of IVF in 1980 (when IVF was still in its infancy around the world), Candice Reed is healthy, positive and looking forward to her fourth decade!

Though Reed has been reticent to give tons of interviews, she did prepare a statement that included the following:

“It’s just kind of like you’ve got blonde hair or you wear glasses and it was just a knowledge that that’s the way that it happened… The best thing about being an IVF baby is knowing that I was loved and wanted well before I was even conceived.”

Reed is now a strong advocate for IVF in Australia.
