Giuliana and Bill Rancic haven’t been shy about seeking fertility treatments. In fact, after two rounds of IVF, they declared not quite a year ago that they would wait to attempt a third. However, it seems that they made the choice to try sooner than they thought.
The couple has now announced that they’ll be going to their fertility specialist for another IVF fertility treatment in the coming weeks. As they’ve noted to the press, the impetus for their decision was a statement by their physician that Giuliana was in a good position egg-wise for another attempt.
Though we don’t always talk about Hollywood duos who are undergoing fertility treatments, we have kept up with the Rancics. As a team, they are a positive force for getting a true picture out about what it’s like to go through the process of working with trained reproductive specialists to attempt to conceive.
The Rancics also seem to be excellent at putting the experience in perspective and focusing on the end goal – having a child. In fact, despite Giuliana’s good-natured grumbling, she’s incredibly optimistic. She’s even noted that if she had twins, she’d still go for more fertility treatments if it were a possibility, just to have additional babies.
In the end, the Rancics seem to have chosen a fertility specialist they trust, which is probably one of the reasons they have remained so upbeat. If you’re interested in finding out about whether or not fertility treatments are right for you, contact the Reproductive Science Institute with locations in Chesterbrook and Wyomissing PA to set up a consultation.

“New cure for infertility!”
“Cure your infertility once and for all!”
“New secrets to curing infertility revealed!”
In the reproductive health science industry, we hear it all – the claims of cures, the offers of “secret tricks”, the tell-all missives from “gurus”. But the truth of the matter is that there is no single “cure” for infertility.
Now, before you become upset or unhappy, please know that there are ways to overcome infertility in many cases. At RSI, one of the Philadelphia area’s most reputable fertility clinics, we perform “miracles” every day. But there is not one cure-all for all types of infertility.
That’s one of the reasons it pays to be very cautious – and scientific – when it comes to your reproductive health. If you’ve been having trouble conceiving, you need to see a specialist, not just read a book or buy a tonic or vitamin. Every case is 100% unique; thus, the way to work around different forms of infertility varies accordingly.
P.T. Barnum said that there was someone willing to give up his money born every minute… and P.T. Barnum took advantage of that willingness. Others will try to operate similarly and separate you from your finances in an effort to sell you a “cure” that simply doesn’t exist.
It would be amazing if there really were a one-stop-shopping method to treating infertility. However, there is not. But there ARE answers… and there IS hope! Come to RSI for a consultation and find out what your options are before falling prey to snake oil.

It was once believed that a woman who had a tubal ligation (commonly referred to as “getting your tubes tied”) was essentially “infertile” in the sense of being unable to conceive for the rest of her life. Now, though, doctors are often able to perform “reversals”, which is opening the door for women who have changed their minds about getting pregnant again.
In the United States, almost three-quarter of a million tubal ligations occur each year. And when left alone, they are approximately 99.5% effective as a method of birth control. In fact, about a third of married people using contraceptives choose tubal ligation as a means of ceasing to have any (or more) children.
However, as was mentioned before, years go by and partners’ desires as to how large of a family they want can change. In that case, it’s wise to look into either a tubal reversal, if possible, or in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Surprised to hear that IVF would be used by someone who chose tubal ligation? It’s really not a huge surprise. IVF bypasses the risks associated with a tubal reversal (which is a surgical procedure) and also addresses additional fertility issues that may be of concern to the woman or her partner.
If you’ve had a tubal ligation and would like to have a child (or additional children), contact RSI, the Philadelphia area’s premiere fertility clinic, for a consultation.

It is understandable that individuals who fought cancer and are in remission want to go on and lead their normal lives. For those in the childbearing years, this could very likely include starting a family at some point. Unfortunately, though, the odds are high for female infertility in individuals who have undergone chemotherapy. Why do we only mention women, you may ask. Because women are born with their ovaries containing all the eggs they will ever have in their lives, where as men’s sperm is continually replenished throughout their reproductive lives. Thus, chemotherapy is much more likely to spread to and effect a woman’s ovaries than to have a long-lasting effect on a man’s sperm.
Luckily, there are so many options for a woman who wants to have children these days. If you have not yet undergone chemotherapy, but know that you will, talk to your doctor about the state of your health and whether a procedure of removing some of your eggs to have them frozen for future use would be something you could withstand prior to your chemotherapy treatments. If not, or if you have already undergone chemotherapy and now find that you are facing infertility, there are still plenty of options for you! You could look into egg donation and IVF or perhaps surrogacy. A study is also currently in the works in Melbourne, Australia, testing the effectiveness of goserelin in protecting the ovaries of the women to whom it has been administered prior to their chemotherapy treatments. Please feel free to contact us at RSI for a consultation or if you have any questions.

Several theories exist on the cause of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) though none have been confirmed. Yet it is a hormonal disorder that affects up to 10% of women. The characteristics can vary, just as the age at which a women is diagnosed with the disorder varies. Sometimes it is noticed in the very early or late reproductive years, but it is more typically diagnosed in a women’s 20s or 30s. Obviously named for unruptured follicles (“cysts”) on the ovaries, PCOS has other symptoms including, but not limited to:
- menstrual irregularities or even absent menstrual periods
- irregular ovulation
- infertility
- issues with acne
- weight issues
- growth of hair on the face
- growth of hair on the body
- thinning hair on the head (similar to male pattern baldness)
- deep voice
Although PCOS cannot be cured, it can certainly be managed. Women have found success in altering their diet, trying acupuncture, getting into an exercise routine or utilizing medical treatments with the help of a doctor. RSI has effectively counseled a great number of women with PCOS and will very willingly answer your questions and set up a consultation.

While reading up on fertility issues, causes of infertility and female infertility, you may have come across the topic of hostile cervical mucus or you may have even been told by a doctor that you have hostile cervical mucus yourself. But what does that mean and how does it play a role in infertility?
Cervical mucus is crucial in guiding sperm into the uterus where it will meet the egg for fertilization. It protects sperm from the typically acidic environment of the vagina, as well as being able to determine and slow sperm that are abnormal and keep them from reaching the egg. If cervical mucus not the right consistency or completely lacking then any sperm entering the vagina will not have the right environment to help it get to the uterus and reaching its ultimate destination of fertilizing an egg. It’s normal for cervical mucus to change in consistency throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle, but in a typical cycle the cervical mucus will reach an ideal state around the middle of the cycle, when ovulation occurs. Cervical mucus can be considered hostile due to: ineffective or low levels of estrogen, presence of anti-sperm antibodies, thick and sticky consistency and in some cases it has occurred in women who are taking Clomid.
The positive in all of this is that hostile cervical mucus is a condition that can fairly easily be corrected by your fertility doctor. Set up a consultation today!

Secondary infertility is a topic about which we at RSI are often asked. So we thought we’d put together a handy FAQ guide to help you understand this area of reproductive science.
1. What is secondary infertility?
Secondary infertility occurs when a woman or couple has been able to have one (or more) child naturally but finds herself/themselves unable to conceive again. Thus, they experience fertility issues a “second” time around.
2. Who is at risk for secondary infertility?
Secondary infertility can happen at any time, although the older the woman, the stronger the chances are that she will experience it. For instance, women over 35 who have had regular, unprotected sex for 6-12 months and have not gotten pregnant are usually considered to have problems with fertility.
3. Are there any psychological side effects to secondary infertility?
Secondary infertility can be extremely frustrating for couples; thus, it can take a toll on the marriage or relationship. Though all fertility issues can be troubling, parents of children who wish to have more can become particularly angry, disheartened or depressed when going through secondary infertility.
4. What are the causes of secondary infertility?
There are no specific causes to secondary infertility; truly, there can be a whole host of issues at stake. That’s why it’s important for the couple to go to a place like RSI to discover what’s really going on.
5. How many people have had secondary infertility?
Though there aren’t any exact ways to measure the couples who experience secondary infertility (as some do not reach out for assistance and are therefore untracked), it is estimated that at least one million couples in the United States are currently going through the condition.
If you would like to know more about secondary infertility for yourself, please schedule an appointment for a consultation with RSI.

At RSI, we’re open to any forms of fertility treatment, even those that might not be considered “mainstream”. But sometimes, we see men and women who have tried homeopathic, so-called “natural” fertility treatments for years and years… only to realize that they’ve wasted their time — and dollars – on these methods.
If you’ve been wooed by the “go natural to get pregnant” headlines touting fertility treatments made up of everything from herbs to mild dietary changes, there’s usually not anything innately wrong with trying such methods to conceive. In fact, many of our patients try or have tried alternative methods to have a child.
The real issue comes into play when patients have spent copious amounts of time and money investing in practices that have not produced any well-documented results.
Our recommendation is to bring all your thoughts and questions, including those involving “alternative” remedies, to a trained, reputable fertility specialist for a consultation. That way, you can be assured that you’re not wasting any time on methods that are unlikely to work while simultaneously discussing all the choices that are available to you, including those that are homeopathic.

If you’ve ever watched Trading Spaces, the phenomenal program that aired on TLC several years ago, you were no doubt mesmerized by the abilities of Vern Yip. And now he’s about to become a daddy… for the second time!
Yip and his partner worked with a surrogate to allow them to become parents again. And (through their media reps) it appears that they couldn’t be happier!
Of course, you don’t have to be a Hollywood star or a household name to consider surrogacy; in fact, it’s becoming more and more acceptable in America as the facts (rather than myths) of fertility issues begin to filter into the mainstream.
If you’re considering surrogacy or would just like to know more about the process, feel free to visit RSI at our Philadelphia area office. We’ll be happy to give you a consultation and help you determine if working with a surrogate is the best solution for you (and/or your partner.)
And, as we always say when we mention a “happy ending” for any person… we wish Yip and his family all the joys that parenthood can bring!

It’s always interesting when a famous individual speaks out on a topic related to fertility, as it offers us an opportunity to have a dialogue.
This week, Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex in the City”) talked candidly about surrogacy. (She and husband Matthew Broderick became parents in June thanks to the help of a surrogate who gave birth to the couple’s twins.)
We recommend that you look over the article because it contains some very honest thoughts on the topic of surrogacy. It also dispels the myth that Parker was somehow looking to a surrogate to avoid changing her body shape (as would occur in a natural pregnancy.)
If, after you read the piece, you’re still filled with more questions than answers, feel free to contact our offices for a consultation. That way, you can learn more about how surrogacy might work in your situation.
