Celebrities and Assisted Reproductive Techniques

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Celine Dion.  Giuliana Rancic.  Neil Patrick Harris.  They’ve made headlines the past year as they’ve openly discussed their experiences with assisted reproductive techniques (ART).

In Dion’s case, her fertility treatments may have been long and uncomfortable, but she recently gave birth to twins and is reported to be happier than ever.

For Rancic, fertility treatments haven’t provided her with a child yet, but she and her husband are hopeful that they can still conceive.

Harris and his male partner opted for surrogacy to fulfill their dreams of becoming dads.

Thanks to the openness shared by celebrities like Dion, Rancic and Harris (through their publicity managers, of course), men and women have a better understanding of what IVF, IUI, egg donation and surrogacy are all about.

Though no one who hasn’t been through the experience of infertility can truly appreciate the challenge of the journey, having Hollywood’s elite tell their stories does provide a much-needed opening for discussions about ART.

Our question to you is this:

Does reading about stars’ difficulties with their fertility help you in any way?

IVF Cancer Link Not Accurate Say Researchers

Monday, December 6th, 2010

If you’ve heard that having IVF increases the chances of women getting cancer, you’re not alone.  This ominous headline has been splashed across the Internet for years.  But new research from Sweden shows that there is no connection between IVF and cancer after all.

The Swedish study, which included thousands of participants, took place over 25 years and discovered no link between the chances of IVF patients having a higher risk of breast, cervical or uterine cancers than their counterparts who did not undergo IVF.

In fact, part of the research suggested that women who underwent IVF might actually have LESS risk than other females, though this hypothesis remains to be seen.

It’s good news not only for those seeking fertility treatments, but also for all the women who have used IVF (including stars like Celine Dion and Guiliana Rancic) to help them conceive.

New IVF Update from Celine Dion

Friday, July 9th, 2010

As we’ve blogged about before, Celine Dion recently announced that she was pregnant with twins after undergoing six rounds of IVF treatment.

A few days ago, 19-weeks pregnant Dion announced the gender of her twins, and it’s baby blue all the way!  Two boys will be joining the family (mom, dad and 9-year-old big brother who was also conceived after fertility treatments) at the end of the year.

Reportedly, Dion is thrilled with the outcome of her IVF journey, which she has admitted in the past hasn’t been simple.

A Little Bit of Info about IVF…

IVFstands for in vitro fertilization, a medical process whereby a human egg (ova) is fertilized by a human sperm outside the womb.  The fertilized egg is then transferred to the womb of the mother (or, in cases where a woman cannot carry a child to term because of complications, an approved surrogate.)

The rate of success during IVF varies widely depending on a number of factors, including the age of the mother, the ability of the reproductive health specialist, the health of the parents, etc.   However, thanks to medical improvements, live birth rates continue to increase around the world.

  • Celine Dion Vows to Keep Trying IVF Despite Recent Miscarriage

    Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

It’s no secret that megastar Celine Dion has gone through IVF treatments in the past. In fact, she’s been quite vocal about her experiences. But for Dion, as happens for many women, a latest round of IVF treatments have ended in a miscarriage. To Dion’s credit, however, she’s not going to give up hope. Though she’s headed back to Las Vegas for more entertaining, she still has thoughts of conceiving a baby on her mind.

As Dion noted in a recent interview, she’s going to keep attempting IVF “until it works”.

We wish her much luck and applaud her for her positive attitude and willingness to discuss this personal situation.

  • How Long Can Frozen Embryos Remain Viable? In Celine Dion’s Case, Quite a While!

    Friday, August 21st, 2009

How long can an embryo that’s been frozen in preparation for in vitro fertilization attempts remain viable?  In the case of Celine Dion, who just announced she was pregnant with the couple’s second child, quite a while.

In fact, Dion’s doctor has told the media that the embryo used for this pregnancy was frozen eight years ago.  And that’s not the oldest embryo that’s remained viable after being frozen; others have survived for 10-15 years, according to medical reports.

Obviously, any couple who is considering in vitro fertilization should speak with their fertility specialists about the length that any embryos should remain in a frozen state.

However, as Dion’s experience shows, it’s now possible for a woman in her twenties to wait years for in vitro once an embryo has undergone the freezing process.
