October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which makes the following news story all the more pertinent…
E! Entertainment channel host Giuliana Rancic, whose fertility journey has been chronicled on the pages of major magazines as well as new blogs across the world, recently announced shocking news. The woman who has been so open about her IVF procedures now has another medical issue – breast cancer.
Ironically, it was her IVF treatments that led to the discovery. During her third round of IVF, she had to get a mammogram, and the breast cancer was detected.
Rancic is still going ahead with the third IVF treatment and has vowed to continue to try for a child despite her infertility and breast cancer. Her husband, Bill Rancic, is on board with her decision to remain a positive fighter in all aspects of her life.
We hope for the best for Rancic and her family as they battle together. We also support all the females and males who are dealing with infertility with as much grace, poise and optimism as the Rancics. We know it can be tough, but we’re here for any individual or couple who is seeking medical assistance to become a parent.
Feel free to contact the Reproductive Science Institute (RSI) anytime to schedule an appointment and find out how our fertility specialists can assist you.

Giuliana Rancic of E! News and Fashion Police hasn’t kept quiet about her first two in-vitro fertilization (IVF) attempts, and she’s not keeping quiet now as she goes for the third try.
Despite setbacks, Rancic has kept her sense of humor, quipping, “I think third time’s a charm. I feel good about the third time!” This attitude is refreshing, especially given the fact that she experienced a miscarriage during her second IVF attempt.
(As an FYI, miscarriage is not uncommon; in fact, many women undergo several IVF rounds to healthily conceive a child. And Rancic’s own doctor is the one recommending a third try; again, we’re not in the least bit surprised.)
Having someone as visible as Rancic show the public what IVF is all about is a boon to fertility specialists and clinics, including the Philadelphia area’s Reproductive Science Institute (RSI). Not only does having her speak openly add a familiar face to fertility treatments, but it also helps squelch many of the commonly-held myths and misconceptions about IVF.
Rancic’s positivity has positioned her as a great role model for women who are undergoing fertility treatments. As she noted in a recent article: “It’s very easy to just be sad and feel bad… and get a lot of attention for it. Mourn, be sad. But then you have to look at the positive. There are so many things in my life…”
We look forward to hearing how Rancic’s next IVF treatment goes. Here’s hoping for all the best in the world for this optimistic star!

What does the UK’s version of Big Brother have to do with infertility? Read on to discover the inside scoop….
Chantelle Houghton, 27, was a contestant on the show several years ago (2006) and has admitted that her obsession with being thin has hurt her chances to have a child without IVF treatment.
Noted Houghton to the BBC:
“Because of my obsession with food and my crash dieting when I had bulimia, I’ve ruined my chances of having a baby naturally.”
Though doctors have not said she absolutely cannot have children on her own, they have reportedly told Houghton she has “low fertility” and have suggested fertility treatments should she and current boyfriend Alex Reid want to get pregnant.
Houghton isn’t taking the discovery lightly and is now speaking out to raise awareness about the connection between eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating on fertility.
It’s sad to hear Houghton say she blames herself, especially since eating disorders are not a deliberate choice. Yet it’s heartening to know that she’s trying to help others not become as obsessed with numbers on a scale or looking “a certain way” to fit unrealistic media standards.
If you have or have had an eating disorder, we at RSI, one of Philadelphia area’s premiere fertility clinics, recommend you undergo therapy (and hospitalization, if necessary) to control the condition before entering into fertility treatments.
Remember that there IS life and can be pregnancy after an eating disorder. But not until you get control of your health.

Celine Dion. Giuliana Rancic. Neil Patrick Harris. They’ve made headlines the past year as they’ve openly discussed their experiences with assisted reproductive techniques (ART).
In Dion’s case, her fertility treatments may have been long and uncomfortable, but she recently gave birth to twins and is reported to be happier than ever.
For Rancic, fertility treatments haven’t provided her with a child yet, but she and her husband are hopeful that they can still conceive.
Harris and his male partner opted for surrogacy to fulfill their dreams of becoming dads.
Thanks to the openness shared by celebrities like Dion, Rancic and Harris (through their publicity managers, of course), men and women have a better understanding of what IVF, IUI, egg donation and surrogacy are all about.
Though no one who hasn’t been through the experience of infertility can truly appreciate the challenge of the journey, having Hollywood’s elite tell their stories does provide a much-needed opening for discussions about ART.
Our question to you is this:
Does reading about stars’ difficulties with their fertility help you in any way?

Kylie Minogue, the pop singer from “Down Under” who stole America’s collective heart in the late 1980s is now 42 and may soon be the latest star to try fertility treatments.
Minogue has announced she’s seriously considering working with an egg donor so she can conceive. She’s concerned that chemotherapy and radiation as a result of treating breast cancer in 2005 has most likely left her unable to have a baby naturally.
Minogue’s age could also play a factor. Studies have shown that women over 40 have a decreased likelihood of being able to get pregnant. Thus, fertility treatments could provide an effective solution.
Though Minogue hasn’t made an official decision, we’ll definitely keep you posted!

The rich and famous aren’t any less likely to need fertility treatments than everyday individuals and couples. That’s one of the reasons that it comes as no surprise to learn that Rod Stewart and his wife spent over two years investing in IVF treatments to conceive.
In August, the couple (Stewart is married to Penny Lancaster) announced that they were pregnant; however, what the world didn’t realize is that it took so long for them to have a child together.
Stewart, 65, and Lancaster, 39, have begun to discuss their IVF treatmentjourney publicly, including the struggles they experienced in their relationship while trying to have a baby. As Stewart has said, it was an “emotional rollercoaster” ride the couple endured as they waited.
Stewart and Lancaster went through three rounds of IVF treatments before hearing the good news. Though that sounds like many, various sources indicate that the average number of IVF treatment cycles needed before conception hovers closer to four.
As with all couples who have taken the fertility walk together, we wish Stewart and Lancaster all the happiness in the world.

Neil Patrick Harris, star of the 1990′s “Doogie Houser, M.D.”, will soon be bouncing twins on his knee.
Harris (who officially identified himself as a homosexual several years ago) and his partner, David Burtka, chose to use a surrogate over adopting a child. The surrogate’s identity has not been revealed (which is typical during the surrogacy process), but Harris has confirmed that the twins are due this autumn.
We wish Harris and Burtka much joy as their family doubles!
If you’re interested in learning more about surrogacy as an option OR if you wish to become a surrogate to a family struggling with fertility issues, contact the fertility specialists at RSI.

As we’ve blogged about before, Celine Dion recently announced that she was pregnant with twins after undergoing six rounds of IVF treatment.
A few days ago, 19-weeks pregnant Dion announced the gender of her twins, and it’s baby blue all the way! Two boys will be joining the family (mom, dad and 9-year-old big brother who was also conceived after fertility treatments) at the end of the year.
Reportedly, Dion is thrilled with the outcome of her IVF journey, which she has admitted in the past hasn’t been simple.
A Little Bit of Info about IVF…
IVFstands for in vitro fertilization, a medical process whereby a human egg (ova) is fertilized by a human sperm outside the womb. The fertilized egg is then transferred to the womb of the mother (or, in cases where a woman cannot carry a child to term because of complications, an approved surrogate.)
The rate of success during IVF varies widely depending on a number of factors, including the age of the mother, the ability of the reproductive health specialist, the health of the parents, etc. However, thanks to medical improvements, live birth rates continue to increase around the world.

In an interview with People magazine, starlet Helena Bonham Carter spoke candidly about her journey to become a second-time mother.
Bonham Carter, who is over 40, began taking Clomid as part of a fertility treatment, but did not respond favorably to the medication. From there, she tried alternative medicine, but still had no success.
After beginning to investigate IVF, Bonham Carter became pregnant naturally. However, she’s been quick to note that she would have turned to at least one round of IVF had she not received the good news.
